It's great to see the Mud River and Pristine Salvage back again.
Do the seagulls still squawk as loud as they did before?

Thanks Kay for MR &PS, and jadeski for the pics. Looked like a great show.

Thank you for those pics. Mud River combo gets my vote too, just how do you get miniature flaking paint (on the wheelhouse) ? It is just working mucky and beautiful.

I don't know what technique Mud River Boatworks used to get flaking paint, but I have read that you can use rubber cement - place dots of cement on the object before painting, then use your finger to rub off the cement and paint after the paint dries.

arrow5
Apr 22, 2008, 10:51 AM
Thanks Brooks, the technique is called "frisket". Any ideas on the water damaged ply door panel ? Yeah I know...varnish it and put it outside for 10 years or so ....! Bet you its got wood-worm holes too...!

Re Flaking paint:

As I recall, the builder mentioned toothpaste and a lot of patience.....

This could start a new thread: "How did you get that effect?"
Just like the rust discussion a while back.

Any stern shots of the Mud River.

There's something about the drive.

Hoghappy

I see what ya mean about the drive! Good Aye! :D

Capt. Crash

arrow5
Apr 22, 2008, 02:47 PM
It could be the bottom of an outboard or a Z-drive ?

CaptLee
Apr 22, 2008, 04:59 PM
The drive is actually two of the old Marx Z-drives without the Pop on Kort nozzles. Yes the seagulls still squak loudly when you put the battery in. Kay Tillman is putting a West Coast Master Builders show together and is in the process of getting a Radio matched up to Mud River so it can be operated, but will not be competing just showing off what can be done with a model boat. Was informed that it was a record turnout with 57 boats entered. Overall it was Good contest, weather was a bit cool but breeze was low, no fires last the last Fall Regatta. Everyone had a good time and it was nicely laid-back so no frantic rushing around to get it done. Sorry about no pic's but left my camera home.

The Mud River is phenominal. Not overly crowded with equipment and junk, but enough to see it's a hard working pushboat.

For distressing paint on wood, Micro-Mark makes small, stiff-bristled brass brushes just for doing this kind of thing. Check them out: www.micro-mark.com

Those little gas engines are cool- At our club meeting in March, a fellow from the local small engine club (Wish I could remember the name) brought over a similar engine that he designed and built himself... It was beautiful and was an amazing runner- very smooth and had a great sound...

The submarine in the photo actually sank while it was running, there was a loud bang and then it sank to the bottom, the owner went swimming for it. I took this picture before it sank, the one in the previous post shows the damage to WTC after it was recovered.

Thanks guys...

The Inland Nautical Society Regatta was a blast. Lots of boats, plenty of friendly people, breakfast, lunch and perfect weather. We arrived a little past 9AM and it wrapped by 5PM. Those boys down south sure like the big screws. Never seen such big props on model boats, pushing around 60-80 pound barges was no problem.

On behalf of the members of the Mission Bay RC Scale Boaters in San Diego, I would like to express our thanks and appreciation for the hard work and long hours that Kay Tillman, Tom Lewis, Ed & Joann Bair, Jack Murphy and many of the other members of the Inland Nautical Society put in to make the INS FALL REGATTA in Riverside a success.

We thouroughly enjoyed the event and look forward to next Spring's Regatta.

If you are within driving distance and were unable to attend this year, put this event on your schedule for next spring. You will see some fantastic boats and enjoy the friendly folks of the INS in Riverside. :)

Had a fun time at the regatta today. Temp was high, but the shade trees and slight breeze made it perfect.

AJ and I had our first go at team towing, he lead, I followed, had a 65 pound, 48" barge between us, ended up with a first place plaque. I got a first place in Navigation under 24" & AJ's Dufresne got a 2nd place for pleasure. :)
