Hey I thought I would remind all those in the PNW that this years regatta is only a week a way on Saturday, June 7th. This show is always a great way to get the summer boating season off and running. Many boats of various styles and types from all over the PNW, Canada, and west coat in general. Besides lots of boats, there will be lunch, a raffel, new nav courese( viewable on line), and as always--great commeraderie with fellow modelers. :) For more information or need directions, go to www.shipmodelers.com . For those with a signifigant other that likes to shop--Bellvue Square is just across the street while the model goodies are in the park. Hope to see you all there.
BTW how about a show of hands on who is comming from this group. ;)

Har! I know that's just what you say to keep the Californians away.
Here in Motown, we have about the same number of cloudy (and precipitating) days as Seattle... and it's colder too!

Funny thing, we don't have to try very hard to keep people away... :o

We had to install a volcano to try to keep people away...
Scary weather...wet rainy wet,... scary volcano... :o

Everyone click on the sunshine in the weather windows above, and
drag the sunshine over to saturday... :p

I should be in town tomorrow, and make an effort to get to the pond
bright and early Saturday. Planning on bringing four boats and
possibly a larger table this year... I'll bring a box-o'-fenders and
some LED lamps if anyone has need.

Crabbing--sounds like something to do out on a boat for food or to go to a doctor and have curred.

Ok, I'm going to try and be there. I'll bring my springer, but she's only the second model I've every built, so I'm almost embarrassed to show her. It will be fun to put her in the water with other boats for her maiden voyage (with a superstructure) though. I'm also really looking forward to seeing how you experts do things and hoping I can glean some tips :D The only model boats I've seen in real life are those in the hobby shop display case :o

Aerominded~

Since it rains here so rarely, it's the first time these guys have seen water deep enough to wade in. So we always reserve the first 2 hours for standing and wading. :) :D :D And, After the "flood rain" we also wade around just to get warmed up. Then the NWRC Club sets up the lines; bouys; barges; docks; mountains and bridges for the Navigation challenge. That also usually happens before we see the sun. You might have noticed that the sun did not show up today.

I'm a rookie at this so some of the pictures are even under-exposed (I think I imagined that the sun actually came up this morning!).

Bring your boots if you come up in any month other than August (first two weeks only). :o

Maybe a member of NWRC Ship Builders can 'splain what they were really doin'. ;)

Sorry I wasn't able to attend. I hate it when something more important than boats gets in the way. Especially, when I know its way more important! :o That's life...

One trend that I noticed was that there were far fewer warships than I expected. I don't know if it was just a wrong assumption on my part to think they were more popular, or if it's a NW thing to have other tastes (maybe we see enough gray). Tugs were by far the most common, and I saw lots of cruisers and work boats.

Aero,
I attended the 1st Foss Cup (1995, last century!) and saw the layout and some of the setup.
The pond is no more than 2 ft deep and all concrete, with excellent visibility.
During that event boats were rescued by designated waders.
Wading is easier than Spreckels Lake which ranges from 2.5 to 14 ft by some estimates with a muddy bottom and no visibility in the last 10 years. [I have seen the bottom at lakeside in S.F., a long time ago.]

Back to Bellevue (sic?). Set up is a lot easier. You could even set up and take pictures from a barstool (no beer!) in the middle of the pond, if the harbor master could be persuaded. No dinghy necessary. Or sit on one of Ron Burchett's barges. See 3rd picture: http://www.tugboats.com/foss.htm

Glad this show went so well. Hope you enjoy the Foss cup this year.

Hee hee, yeah, I figured that is what they were up to... (setting up the course, etc.) I like Spreckels but, clear water @2' deep has some significant benefits... (I doubt there are many boats sitting on the bottom in Bellevue!) :)

Well we had a regatta and the rain stayed away!!! There was a good turnout considering the weather. Cold enough to snow in the passes this time of year is just wrong. We saw a few new boats this year and several others that have been around for a while. Contestants and visitors came from as far away as southern California and northern BC, Canda. The youngest was a little girl that ran a Northhampton tug (with dad as navigator) nd was only about 6 years old!! :) Have to say, there were more photos taken of her running the boat than any other person all day. There were about 50 entries and several more on display. As noted by Polar Sailor, there are more tugs and work boats than warships. Just tough to get people that model them to come out and play. Of the new models this year, most notable were the Dolphin Class tug, large scale military vessel like the "Visby" class, a Grand Banks cruiser, an American Enterprise crew boat, Roapanachs Tiger Sun, and a hand full of Springers. We had a new and interesting nav course that challenge ones ability to manuver and dock their vessel(s). As with any event that we do, we had an excellent picnic style lunch ( chicken, beans, salads, chips, fruit, strawberry shortcake, beverages) provided for all the contestants/guest so that no one went hungry. At the end of the day we waited for awards by doing the raffel with lots of great goodies to be won, including several boats, hulls, parts, hobby gift certificates, and nautical related items. Ran late, but it was saturday and we didn't need to be in a big hurry.
Also like to thank all the members from R/C Groups that came to the regatta. I think the count that Umi had going was around 7-8 of us.
The pond is great that it is cement and shallow enough to set nav course failey quickley because of it. We usally just wear short and walk around in the water when it is warm out. I was kind of afraid of hitting an iceburg out there as we moved things out and helped with putting boats in/out of the water. Besides, like a sponge, it is easier to stay hydrated standing in the water. :p

An absolutely great time, Especially the weather. On the way in, it was
Pouring down rain to the North, in Woodenville, and South in Tacoma, but
just a grey overcast and sprinkles in Bellevue all day.

The course was challenging, especially all the landings. I think the only thing
that could have happened a bit better would have been hearing who won
what catagory before everyone left for the day. I know I got third place(again)
running the Washington State Ferry Kaleetan. I blame Ben for that,...
He keeps taking first. One of these days, I'll get a score good enough for
second place, then he better watch out. :o

The pond was busy all day, meeting and greeting and setting up boats.
Seems like everytime I started to do something someone or something would
come up and I'd come back and have to try to figure out what was originally
doing.

Great to meet a lot of RC group members.
The usuall suspects, Ropanach, KeithS, Tachikaze, Dain,
And some of the newer members here
Mule One, and Polar Sailor... Both building springers.
Olscuzbut came all the way from Kamloops BC.

I put my springer into the pond at one point, and Mule One was there
taking pictures and chatting, so I handed him my controls... He ran it for
a bit, and then tried to hand me back the controls, I told him to play with
it a bit, At which point someone came by and dragged me off for this or
that reason... About 15 minutes later Mule one came walking back with my
boat and transmitter. :o Poor guy, probably felt bad that I left him running my boat... :p

A few images that I managed to take... :o

Are you kidding! That was cool. I got to play with your springer for at least a half an hour.
Also I got to learn a bit about the controls and handling of an RC boat. It was great; don't feel sorry for me.
I really enjoyed it and can hardly wait to get my ol'Mule in the water.

But, the Mule has to go on "Hold" while I re-deck the back yard patio before the 4th of July.

This is the closest pic that I have.

I did see them being packed and as I "recall"... just below what you see in the picture is a "round shape" that must provide the floatation/bouyancy.
Then there is a similar shape as the top (inverted) which is attached to a chain (?) and then a disk shaped brick about 2" thick which anchors it.

I'm sure Keith could describe the material or get you in touch with the individual who built them.

Our Regatta is coming up and I'm thinking again.

Some of the bouys are PVC pipe and ends ith Sintra/plasti/wood frames on top. Have a small eyelet on the bottom for main weight and a counter weight so that they can hang at the correct depth.
Some of the larger bouys are made of styrofoam disk with the same kind of tops added to them.

Here are a few more pictures. This is a very well run event people, I highly recommend it. I can safely say that of all the boats displayed there, mine were in the worse condition. Some very impressive work. Note the picture of the bridge of one of the models, very very jealous

The M-1 was acquired from Cliff Shaw, he originally built this for combat, I am not sure where the gun is. He got tired of playing with it as it is still not running right, but I did get my best run with it to date during this event. I had to bribe Cliff with a bottle of Paddy Irish Whiskey to bring it down to me.

Herrmill, I now know you have spies in Scotland...but it isnt going to be a submarine(no comment Toes!) This is going to be my stretched Springer. Complete with 12" span biplane to be catapulted off. El Cheapo build using wheelhouse from Dickie Tug and girders from toy crane. 2 540 motors, standard Springer fittings X2.
