Greetings all;
I fly in an area of lower NY state called the Mid-Hudson Valley. I fly on a sod farm and have been for over 20 years. The problem with this area is it takes some time after the winter where the field dries out enough so it isn't muddy. The soil consists of a very high peat content and is almost black... none the less, the "black-dirt region of New York State".

I managed to get to the field this past Saturday afternoon. Because of the location of the field it is prone to some rather higher than normal winds. There isn't much obstruction to tame the winds.

SO after about 1 1/2 hours of set-up, checking and double checking I finally get my trustworthy Grand Esteem on the line. By now the winds are a steady 15-25 mph.

After about the 3rd trim flight I had the plane tamed down where I was able to enjoy some 7-10 minute flights. Landings were more like vertical drops most of the right into my hand.

My fiancee was able to capture these pictures. Good day overall.... :D

When I check in to the Pilot's meeting at contests they look at my glider and sneer.....then they find out what freq. I fly, and go home..........

I'm very envious of your situation there, pard. "Wet" ground? We are in our seventh year of drought here in the Panhandle of Texas, and our main water source, Lake Meredith, is at its lowest point on record (other than when it was filling up after construction of the dam.)
With the dry air we get one hell of a lot of wind, and lots of thermals, but it makes it rather difficult to fly TD in 35mph winds. :(
Cherish what you have there!

If that is true I will stuff my old crystal set in for ballast, and hope for 20 minutes! :D

Gerald.... if you ever have an opportunity to make it north you got to look me up. I'll show you some of the best flying sites in the north east. My buddy Bob, who also posted this thread indicated he was out at the same field I fly this past weekend and had nothing but the best flying so far. We do see winds that come up early to mid afternoon but nothing like what you have describe. Once we get into May I expect to fly to late afternoon with light variable winds.

I don't know how you stand it Kurt! I'm very envious again.
However, I don't think I will be headed back to "The North Country."
I spent a bit of my Navy enlistment at McGuire AFB in NJ, and Lakehurst.
Maybe that will explain the situation........ha :rolleyes:
Once a "Flatlander" ALWAYS one.
I appreciate the invite tho.
