Hi Everyone..........I just picked up a beautifully built and covered Grand Esprit with Rx and servos from a guy. It has not flown and no plans available.
To those who have flown one/and or have one, can you give me the sweet spot for the CG and the throws on the V-tails.........especially if there is a difference on the throws on the rudders (up vers down on each rudder)
Thankyou

CG is ~25% of cord (a rearward CG is kind a detriment on this thing), get all the throw you can get, then tweak the differential, a little can help, but not tons. Get 90 degree of throw on spoilers, the spoilers are not dramatically effective, like a Sagitta. You can have full throw going and be in full control of the approach. Another little clue, depending on your ship, I have flown a Grand with a gyro on the rudder control (single servo per axis) because you can have dutch roll on these things if the tips are a bit on the heavy side.

Hi Pete, here is a shot from the plans, the cg is 3" from the leading edge. I flew mine with the cg at 3" and it was fine. Jose

Hi Guys - Here are the pics of the Grand Esprit. I have a question on weight.........
Wings W/servoe .............24.8oz
wing rods...................... 3.7oz
stab W/screws................ 2.9oz
Fuse W/servos and RX......38.8oz
Total 68.2oz
How far off is this with projected weight?
Thanks

Pete,
From the instructions:
"...check balance point which should be 3/8" behind the front joiner."
"Set up throws as shown using the center hole on the levon horns and adjust the servo arms and/or Vector Director to get movement show on plans."
Be careful when winch launching in high wind. DO NOT USE UP ELEVATOR to steepen the launch angle unless you want to make new wings. This is a strong airplane and winches very well, but use a little common sense and discretion."
From the plans:
Rudder Function: +/- 3/4 inch
Elevator Function: +/- 1/2 inch
Full stick, neutral trim, measured at the inboard trailing edge.
From my own experience, more throw is better, especially on rudder.
Enjoy,
Tim

rsrguy3,
my plans are the original Airtronics plans and they concur with Tim's findings, I am assuming Tim is going off original plans and yes more throws make it more fun to thermal!

I agree and disagree with Tim on the launch issue, the only way to really mess with launch is trim or hook location. Mine hook is way back and I do use EL trim for steep launches. Matter of fact, a bit of a breeze is better than none. Downdwind ones are just plain scarey. Tim is right that hauling back on the stick to change the launch is not good, but also, a preset trim is the trick. Also, the wings are great reads on where you are in stressig the ship. My old one, with stock rods, the rods bent way more than the wing and once you had a set amount (who knows amount) you kept it like that and went on up. I wish I could find a pic of a release of my new GE at the Nats, with a bit of a breeze, going vertical is not a problem and not over stressing the ship. They really launch fairly well, just learn that wing loading signature and go from there.
