I am having a great time with my destroyer, but catch myself thinking of the next build. I think mine will be a powered ocean going heavy lift barge.

Here is the first section of the crane for it.

I'm thinkin' it's going to have to be a pretty big barge. :)

Just put that new model down right there... BACK AWAY from the model, and no one gets hurt!
OK, now just calm down, and get back to work on the first model... http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/Smileys/New/police.gif

LOL.

Should I feel guilty when I have these urges?

Actually, the crane part is for a side project that is on my site under the "Diversions" tab.

I plan to use a Manitowoc 4100W Ringer for the barge along with a heavy lift "A" frame or twin boom contraption. Might make an interesting recovery barge.

It will be interesting if you make the crane operational. ;)

I get tempted by things like one of the Smit Takliftz, and this odd barge...

I'm thinking of something along the lines of this:

Thanks cos918 and mitchlandry, but I have already lusted over at the Scaldis site and have had the drawing pinned to my wall. Not as curvaceous as other pin ups, but way more lifting capacity. :)

cos918, the savage site was a great read. To saw the ship up via a wire rope cable traveling from winc drum to winch drum was very interesting.

pops52,

I like the idea of a heavy lift barge, espeacialy if you build it BIG and with working crane booms.

Another idea and could go with you barge perfectly would be the Dockwise Mighty Servent II. That is a semi submersible heavy lift ship. It was the ship that transported the USS Cole from Yemen back to the US. You could call it the Mini Servant II and use it strictly for rc boat recovery. Now that would be awsome

Her ya go.

Not that I have ever researched any of these ships or anything,....

I believe the Mighty Servant 2 had rolled over and sunk (1999) by the time the Cole was damaged(October 12, 2000). The Cole was transported back on the Blue Marlin.

However, in 1988, the Samuel B Roberts, FFG-58, was transported back, on Mighty Servant 2, after hitting a mine.

:D

umi,

you might be right, Dockwise has several of these ships. There all about the same size with different names. I cant remember which ship sank, one of there salesman told me at the OTC(offshore technology conference)they had scale models of there entire fleet except one.
I do know that the boat that sank was in the price rand of 300 million
I dont know when this was taken

The boat you have pictured is the the Mighty Servant 3, It sank, Dec 2006,
off of Angola as it off loaded the Oil rig in the background. The depth of the
water where it sank is 60 meters. The crane at the back of the superstructure
stands 65meters above the keel... It was a navigation hazard, especially at
night. During the day they had a small boat stationed near the mast, but it
went home every evening.

The Smit Taklift7 was used to help refloat the ship.
Oooh, I could built the MS-3 and the Taklift7...

The Mighty Servant 2 rolled over in a Philippine Strait in 1999. The ship, its
cargo, and some of the crew were lost. They believe it hit an uncharted "rock"

:(

I have another photo of the Cole being transported. Let me dig for it.

Being in the crane business, I still gravitate to something with a working hook. If I stay on this track for the next project it will likely be a hybrid combining several lifting solutions. I would like it to have functionality though.

If I could control the list, I could put my (work in progress) tower crane on it.
