View Full Version : Question Who's Going To The Toledo Show?

Since I'm probably one of those living the furthest away, I thought I'd to see who all is going to Toledo & kindly ask who will be taking pictures to share with those of us who can't attend. It gets awfully lonely over here sailing my boats with nothing but water buffalos to share in my joy... :)
On the other side of the pond, I have several friends attending the Dortmund Model Show (http://www.westfalenhallen.de/messen/intermodellbau/index.php) two weeks later & will be sure to post all photos I get from this huge RC expo.

---And der Kapitan will be there too, as usual, in the booth right next to Loyalhanna Dockyard in aisle "D". ;)
John Fryant will be here with me, as well as Towboat Joe, and CG Bob will be here on Friday only, due to other committments. I expect that all of you who will be attending shall stop by and visit. :)
Oh yes, and identify yourselves as forum members---.
In the next few aisles over, visitors will have a chance to meet Lee Upshaw of Scale Shipyard, Rich Koll of MACK Products, Ralph Warner OF RAM Products, and some other people that model boaters regularly do business with---. :D
There once were more of us, but the ranks have dwindled in recent years,
with the loss of Dumas, Midwest and Danvo---. :p

I'll be there along with twelve Indianapolis Admirals RC club members on Saturday. Thinking about hitting up Lee Upshaw for a discount on an Arleigh Burke kit. Heh heh. At any rate, I'll buy one there if it's available. No models to enter this year.

:) PAT MAT- Nice picture of your schooner model with the MISS OHIO sash on her sails. OH! You meant the boat model. Well it looks like, with God willing, I’ll have the 1930 DODGE speed boat ready for the show, but watch what you touch , the paint will still be drying. Like I promised I will have my camera at the ready for your tug. What a great build! I have got to see all that detail up close and personal. :)

Der Kapitan just brought this thread to my attention...I am not sure how I missed it.
Yes I just sent a Burke hull & plans to Detroit for staging for the Toledo show. I did not send a fittings package as I have to complete casting a set for an order already and it would not be fair for the customer who is waiting.
There is also a Ticonderoga and a couple of Perry class hulls there as well as a HMCS Halifax in both 1:96 and 1:72 scale.
All together I will have 33 hulls total in the booth

Actually
I will be offering deals on the hulls that I have there. ;)
You not only get a deal but you save on the Shipping & Handling as well.
So bring plenty of cash.....and don't tell the :censored:
But do not wait until Sunday thinking you will get a better deal, the hull you want may be gone and I do not have to ship them home.

Lee's right, don't wait until just before the show closes, thinking you'll get a bargain---. :p
The last-minute shopper often gets a big disappointment instead of a big discount, when he finds that what it was that he wanted is sold out---.
I have a few customers that even ordered ahead---. :D

Mar 31, 2008, 03:18 PM
Yep Karl:
It is human nature at these shows to assume that at the end it is a clearance free for all. I stopped playing that game a long time ago.
I just pack everything up and it goes back into a buddy of mine's attic until the regattas over the summer or the next show.
At the last Toledo Show I had a guy come back and talk to me about a kit several times, and when he came back on Sunday afternoon with the intent of offering me a lower amount then what I had even discounted it down to, he found it gone and the reality that if he wanted it now, he was going to be paying the full price plus the shipping and handling charges. Oh Well...I tried to get him what he wanted there but he outsmarted himself.

It costs a lot of money to attend a tradeshow, and it's getting higher every year.
If one figures in the cost of the booth space, travel expenses, lodging and meals, there isn't any allowance for bargain prices, senior discounts or promotions. :p
Yet still they try to hit on you for a "freebie" of some kind---.
I consider it a good show if I break even---. :D

Mar 31, 2008, 06:01 PM
Since I'll be there, I'm bound to break something. I'm bringing my ferry and a towboat. not sure if I would enter any of them in the competition. If they were running boats I'd bring a barge or two.
If River Bill came, the only thing he'd break is wind.
W.L Upshaw
Mar 31, 2008, 06:30 PM
My cost to attend this show is just a bit over $1200.00.
By the time I deduct the cost of the products sold, I will have to sell close to $2000.00 worth of hulls and stuff to break even, If I sell all of the catalogs that I will have there, then it will be a good show as then there is the chance that I will sell additional products in the future to the people who attend.
But that is what going to the shows is all about.

At least you're not having to schlep cabinetry, faucets, toilets, basins, bathtubs, etc.. all the way from China to Chicago or Vegas where we'd drop $50-70k to have a booth at KBIS.
There's nothing quite like jet lag after being up for 40+ hours & discovering your vendor shipped the wrong display stands 5 hours before the show opens then having to put on your best happy face a few hours later when the characters from Designing Women along with the local plumbing trade descend on your booth asking how they can buy a few pieces at a time direct from the factory... And while in Chicago, one better not refuse to pay those grossly inflated hourly rates to hire security or else you'll come back in the morning to find your display ransacked by the local union. :censored: Ah, the memories... :(
Good luck to you vendors who are displaying at the show. I feel your pain & wish you all the best of luck towards having a successful show.
Looking forward to seeing some photos next week after its over.

If your like me the numbered exhibition map drives me crazy.
I had a quick few mins with Excel and got it to produce a layout. Be well aware that there maybe errors for example there is conflict regarding the numbers attributed to the Futaba stand which seemed to be duplicated to other vendors. This probably explains why there are a few blanks on the layout.

I'm in the process of laying up a couple of last-minute orders, and will start packing and loading the car tomorrow. ;)
Luckily for me, driving to Toledo is an option that you aren't able to enjoy, Lee---. :p
No hassles at the airport securty line for me, and no big worries about a strip search, or something even worse---. :D
(hey officer, why are you putting on those rubber gloves? Ooo, nooo---!)

Apr 01, 2008, 07:28 PM
I know what you mean Karl. I shipped 15 orders out today. Now I am making new signs and getting packed.
I did Maritime Security Assesments for the Dept of Homeland Security, and i was always hasseled at the airports, until they were seeing the Dept Seal on all my paperwork, then they would back off a little. I was starting to think that 'Random' was my middle name.
At one airport, the gal insisted on going through my work folders that are marked Confidential, when I suggested that she get her supervisor because she did not have a security clearance high enough to go through those files, she got very abusive. The supervisor finally came over and assesed the sirtuation and cleared me through with normal screening, but after I filed my report on the job I was sent to do.....I also filed a report on this person and her job was reassigned.
Flying anywhere anymore is such a joy, that is why the airlines have hundreds of jets sitting out in the desert both here in California and also in Arizona, mothballed or slated for scrap. It is interesting seeing a brand new 747-400 with less then 100 hours on it sitting in storage.

Lee, the Department of Homeland Security can get even worse than that---.
A few years ago, I went through one of their more rigorous examinations, and almost missed the flight---. ;)
I was a badged FEMA contractor, going to a disaster area---. :p
Talk about disasters, the TSA is the lamest organization that the government lends credibility to---.

There are a few new products in the boating world, though I didn't really focus on them.
A few at Loyalhanna: The Ocean Voyage Charles Adams, with a nicely molded hull and a bunch of fine looking fittings... a 1:72 (which really isn't so latge) Monitor with f/g hull... and the new Raboesch bow thrusters.
The Raboesch bow thrusters have a variety of discharge tube sizes to help fit various models. What I didn't know before is that while the small units have the typical paddle wheel (like Graupner and Robbe), the 2nd largest has twin plastic props, and the biggest unit has these sweeeet twin brass props. Niiice...

ALL models in the competition are required to have radio installed and servos hooked up to the control surfaces. But I can't vouch for its having flown! Maybe someone on the wingy-thing boards can answer for this one...

Not everyone (http://s181686668.onlinehome.us/phpBB2/viewtopic.php5?t=7332) thinks so, and the guy complaining is a vendor new to rc stuff. I'm still waiting for some items I ordered from him in late October; the delivery date keeps getting pushed back.

Bob, it's said that you can't please everybody, and obviously the gent from Rochester found the Toledo show lacking---. :p
And he spent 45 minutes, carefully walking down each aisle, looking for boats and subs?
All he found was Mike's Subworks. NOBODY else had anything for boats---. ;)
I don't recall seeing him, and neither does anybody else.
Ir would take me several hours to check out all the vendors at Toledo, maybe he has a more efficient way to do it? :D

Shoot! When I was at the show for the whole three days, I made several trips through all the vendors and the swap shop. I always found something different every time I walked through.

I'm always amused by some who decry both the lack of high end model products AND the prevalence of toys/RTR goods at hobby shops and shows (see the thread CG Bob linked to...). What they fail to understand is that the toys are GOOD for the "high end" of the hobby!
Remember the bell curve? Whatever you want to measure, you'll find a lot of it in the middle, and less at the tails. Try measuring "interest in R/C models". A few people have never heard of it... a few are scratch builders with their own dedicated model work shops... and there's a whole lot in the middle who find various levels of amusement in the proposition. Today, the distribution of attitudes looks like the first chart... somewhat skewed to the apathetic left side of the chart.
Now, a bell curve can be SHIFTED. And in this case, if we can increase the category of "might ask questions", then we'll naturally increase the other categories to the right... starting with "RTR for Christmas", and all the way up to the master scratch builders! The second chart is our target.
So don't diss anyone who doesn't heliarc their own titanium pressure vessels... instead, take cheer in every new retailer of RTR fishing boats, because their success will naturally lead to increased interest in the entire hobby... and may even keep a few of our retailers in business through tough times.

Just finished reading the rants of the person CB was reffering to. Appears his motivation for attending the show was different than most. I have to give kudos to Skip Assey for reminding this person that what he was looking for is a smaller perstage of the the small part of the hobby. I know a lot of others like to compare to the what has been and not look at the where we are now. I always look at the trade shows as an oppertunity to see what is there and reafirm my beleif that the hobbies are not dead. The folks involved with that show( and others) and the vendors need to know that the majority of the hobby public still enjoys them and the effort put forth, even if it is not as profitable to be there at that moment.

Seems to me that shows are more about exposure... Profit should not be measured only by the 'take away' from the show... have to think more long term than that- So there is no interest in Subs at the show? stop going? If you aren't there showing them, nobody will ever find out about that part of the hobby...
And after watching a too young skipper repeatedly crashing his RTR go-fast into the side rail of the pond and generally running out of control around other boats this past weekend, I am starting to rethink the whole get them started in the hobby early thing...

Aerominded, your line of thinking is right on track. ;)
Vendors attend these shows mainly for the exposure, as there isn't really any "huge" profit to be made---. ;)
Consider it advertising, and the resulting spin-off business, coming weeks and months down the line isn't bad either---. :)
I am generally content if I break even on expenses, or perhaps come away a little bit ahead. :)
The big bonus is that I get to visit a bit with old friends who I maybe only get to see once a year, and that includes repeat customers as well as other vendors, many of whom I've known forever---. :D

I have to agree with aerominded re exposure. Look at the number of posts on this thread just about the bow thruster that was reported on here. That is the ripple effect from teh reports of those attending the show, which can't really be seen or calculated by the vendors, even when the orders do start coming in.
