View Full Version : Discussion outrunner temp sensing?

I have an outrunner and am trying to log the temp. I have both style temp sensors. Right now I have the loop sensor wrapped around the base of the motor. Obviously the sensor can't go around the motor itself since it spins. Is the base accurate enough or is there another way I should be recording the temp of the motor?

Thanks

Supposedly the only temp reading of an outrunner that is relevant is the temperature of the windings far inside the motor. I'm told the temperature of the outer-can does not tell much.

I just shove one of the micro temp sensors in through the end plate that's fixed to the stator so that it lays against the windings, then use a combination of tape and perhaps little wedges of scrap balsa to hold it there. There's a picture of this about halfway down in this article: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=740836

One does have to take a bit of care to orient the end of the thermistor so that it doesn't rub on the magnets of the rotor....

I have visions of the temp sensor getting wrapped in the spinning motor. What temperature do you look for as acceptable?
