I have a new balancer design so thought I would make it available in case it meets other people's needs. It's purpose is to balance large packs as these become more common (but can be used with small ones too). Any balancing current is possible. http://www.flyelectric.ukgateway.net/pic-balancer.htm

It uses a PIC micro so it is able to prioritise balancing which it does by starting with the highest cell(s) first to reduce their risk of over-charge. If you charge while balancing then this approach reduces unnecessary balancing effort. Using program logic makes it possible to fine-tune more aspects of how it works. It is currently designed for up to 7 cells but higher cell counts should be possible. 3 and 4 cell versions are in regular use. These are SMD-based but it would be possible to make versions with 'through hole' components.
