Traxxas XL-1 Speed Control

I am in the process of building a small boat and wish to use a speed control with reverse. I know, I know the Traxxas XL-1 is probably not the best choice, but it is a small boat and my question is this:
Doess the Traxxas XL-1 have a fully proportional reverse??

Actually. It has proportional forward and reverse and can be adjusted for either higher speed or low. I use a couple of them in my KM Graf Spee and another one in my USS Chicago SSN-721.

can you still even get those speed controllers? ESC's seem to be so cheap now that a new water-cooled one should be cheaper and more application specific I would think.
