Now that winter has set in hard, how should NiCd batteries be stored,
charged or discharged ?

I have a Duramaxx 1500 sport pack and two Orion EMax 2400 packs.

discharged and in plastic bags in the freezer. It'll take a few cycles to
get them going in the spring.

So the fact that I let my dozen batteries freeze in the garage (20F)
didn't hurt them at all? I recently brought them in because I figured
they were going to be trashed by the cold... I hope not.

Store them discharged. Storing them at no lower than 0 C (32 F) is good
too, but it'll take a day sitting at room temp and a few charge/discharge
cycles to get them back up to snuff.

Hi,

NiCd best stored discharged, first charge best done at normal 1/10C rate
for 140% to ensure an equalized pack.

,Joey.

maybe not. But leaving them in the garage will continually change
temperature, wich is bad for just about anything, unless your garage is
climate controlled.

I thought this article to be worth a read:

http://www.dansdata.com/gz011.htm

Not exactly on topic, but it clears up some "battery myths".

Dear ksb1,

Before winter you empty your batteries by driving or by using one of
these computer-chargers that can also discharge.
After the weather clears up and you are ready to use the batteries
again. You charge the batteries at one tenth (1/10th) of the capacity of
the pack, 1500mAh pack to be charged at 150mA (2400/10=240mA charge
rate). You charge for 14 hours, 14x 10% = 140% (some manufactures say
160%). The charge is not ideal so energy will be lost thats why you
charge for 140%, to equalize the different cells that had different self
discharge rates during the winter, and differences in charge efficiency.
The cells that are full after for example 110% will start to dissipate
heat while another cell will keep charging. Doing such a serious
overcharge at a fast charge rate will cause problems with the watts
needed to dissipate by full cells.
After doing this one or few times you just use your pack as you were
used to, because the hobby is about having fun bashing instead of
battery science.

,Joey.
