View Full Version : Idea Virginia, Maryland, DC Night Fliers?

We're thinking about trying to piece together a night parkflying event or two at any of several Virginia or possibly Maryland sites, some of which might be in conjunction with night-flying rocketeers who put on a spectacular show. How many of you are from the region? Is there interest?

I'm interested, and I'm sure I could get a couple more people to show up.

Anything close to Virginia Beach? If not, I will head North, my brother and Mom & Dad live up there!

VB? Man, I wish you all would hold one down there! I'll take any excuse to go down to Virginia Beach, especially to fly R/C (the Newport News electric fly last fall was fantastic).
Anyway, it's good to hear that you all are out there, and we'll keep thinking about an event for a little later in the summer. Let me tell you about what's happening April 12, though. A high-power rocketry club (hpr is the hobby of flying rockets that weigh many pounds and climb several thousand feet) with a field just south of Culpeper has invited R/C night fliers to come and provide a few demo flights in between rocket launches at their night fly event. I'm going to fly a little balsa model with a string of miniature Christmas lights I installed last year, but we'd sure like whatever additional flights we can get. In turn, I think anyone who flies anything would find the rocket launches quite spectacular to watch. So, if anyone is interested in participating in that, I'll eventually post the location of that field (it's right on Route 15 about 3 or 4 miles south of Route 29 at Culpeper). But certainly, the more night fliers we can uncover around here, the more easily we can get one of the R/C clubs to put on a bona fide night fly event.

That sounds like a fun event, but it's definitely a bit of a drive.

Sounds fun, I have heard of that rocket launch site. My brother lives in Lorton and he is an RCer, but not a night flyer (yet).
I will have to go outfilt my Slow Stick and practice up some night flying.
Would there be camping available at the site, or nearby?

There may be, I think there may be at least one guy who stays overnight at the field with the equipment between Saturday and Sunday. It would be, what do camping guys say, "primitive", of course. I'll ask the organizer about this.

Just in (or, at least, I just checked my email), Mike who runs the launch says that camping on the field is "no problem". If you'd like to join the mailing list with all the guys preparing for the launch, let me know. There are also numerous people from Tidewater likely to attend, should you wish to share rides or such. In short, everyone would love to have you!

I just found this.
I'm interested if nearby, I live in Reston.
I haven't put lights on a plane yet but I have them and it would be easy to do.
Night flying would have less wind usually but it's not too good for AP which is my big interest.
Let me know when and where.
Thanks,
Paul T.

Wind might be the key issue this time, that cold front will be through the area by tomorrow evening and that might make things a little tough, but they use that field regularly and there will probably be several night fly opportunities this summer down there. By the way, where have you been doing your AP work? Do you belong to any of the clubs around here? I've just started carrying a KMartcam in a couple of my brushless models with pretty good results for a $25 setup ($19.99 camera and $5 used servo to trigger it).

I would strongly support a night flying event in the Tidewater, VA area!!
Did someone mention Night Flying Rockets??? That would be worth the drive!!
Rockets are technically speaking a form a pyrotechnics, right?
Any chance flying as shown in the video would be permitted? :D

I guess I'm late to the party. I live in Laurel, MD and I'm game for some night flying.

We had a night fly in June at our local field, and we had a decent turn out for the first time. Of course, a massive thunderstrom 2 hours before it started didn't help any. We are planning another one in August. I was hoping for the second Friday, but it will be a bright moon. It is way more fun on a moonless night.
I will keep everyone here up today with dates.

Electrics over Tidewater will be having a Night Fly tonight, Sept 26th. If it is weathered out, it will be held on Sat. night the 27th.
HRRC will be holding 2 more night flys this year. The first one will be the night of Friday October 3rd 6-11, glow till 930. No landing fee, no stress. Only requirement is AMA.
The second one will be Friday November 14th. This is the night before our Toys for Tots flyin. There is no landing fee for the night fly, but we sure ask and beg that you bring a new, $10.00, unwrapped toy for the kids!! It is again, 6-11, glow till 930. AMA Required
