I saw the smaller E-Flite Pawnee that's been advertised recently, but I didn't realize that Hangar 9 was coming out with a larger, 80" wingspan version. Looks really sweet!!

The recommended power system is an E-Flite 46, same as the 80" J-3 Cub uses. I have that plane, and it flies great... the Pawnee has almost the same wing area, but a higher AUW, so it'll fly faster but probably still really well. It's also got flaps, so that should make landing a piece of cake.

I notice that they've "finally learned" about the struts... instead of the maddening hex-head bolts & nuts from the Cub, they've got pins and RC car -style snap pins to retain the struts. Struts are aluminum instead of wood, saving weight vs. the Cub too.

While the weight seems a little high for the recommended power system (the Cub is OK on the E-Flite 46, certainly scale), I bet with an E-Flite 60 or equivalent this thing would rule. Could tow smaller scale gliders up with it, too. I'm getting excited! :D

I've been watching this one as well.

Might make a good "smaller" plane to have at all times.

I agree...I grabbed one of the first two to hit Fort worth....and it will be a tow plane for 100" or so sailplanes for me, as well as a fun scale flyer.

Some

They started hitting the LHSs this week....Texas and areas similar in distance from HH got theres on Thursday.

Mine will have a .60 glow equivalent/Axi 4130 clone or equivalent.

It is a beautiful ARF!

I will agree how nice it looks. A friend of mine and I might get one as well. I really like my sport and 3d planes but this does grab your eye.

I think all of the hobby shops are pretty much sold out of the first production run. The Horizon Hobby web site says backordered until late July.

The Pawnee is an outstanding ARF and an excellent flyer. I started with the Eflite 46 for the first 25 or so flights but found it had to work a little to hard and the batteries were getting a little to hot. I switched to a Turnagy 60 size clone which turned out to be a drop in and run it on six cells. Now I'm only pulling 35 amps or so and that is on a 17/12 APC prop. The 46 was pulling over 50 amps on five cells and that was with a 14/6/10 Zinger wood prop. On 4 cells the bird flew with the 46 but that was about all. Go with the larger motor and have more fun I know I have. Now when you kick her in the tail she hauls when needed and down in the dirt racking from one wing to another she is solid as a rock with no hint of a snap out of a turn. I've over 50 flights on her and nothing but good to say about it. She is in my van now waiting for our next time out. It has flown in winds almost 20 mph with no problem as well. Weight is just under 9 pounds but you would not know it when you see her fly. ed

The Pawnee will fly with a wide range of power units.

Since the maiden mine lands smoothly with full flaps and a little power until after touchdown.
