The Z is a belt start (old design) and is a pain in the backside to faff
around with the starter... the TS stands for Top Start, and is much better.
It has a hex socket with a bearing in it so you connect your starter into it
and spin it up... much easier than belt starting.

Z-TS Also has a better rotorhead system with an underslung flybar, unlike
the old-style Z with the overslung flybar. Never had a belt start, but the
top start on my ZTS is really easy. Just have to check that the set screw is
lock-tited in and tight. Nothing more annoying than getting ready to fly and
have that thing pop off.

Go with the new Shuttle Plus. Its the newest version the ZTS, and comes
standard with an aluminum swash while the ZTS has a plastic one. Got a few
other minor upgrades as well.

Just a few minor corrections Andrew:

ALL "Z" series Shuttles had the underslung flybar. It was the most
noticeable change from the previous overslung "X" series (e.g. X, XX to Z,
ZX).

The US Shuttle Plus swashplate is not a true metal swashplate. A true metal
swashplate has a metal lower star AND a metal center star. The Shuttle Plus
now use a swashplate similar to what most 30 size helis have been using as
standard for years, one with a metal inner star and a plastic outer star.
NOTE: In some markets the Shuttle Plus may still come with the archaic
triple plastic swashplate (pastic inner star, plastic outer star, plastic
balls molded onto them) that becomes very sloppy in very short order! I
understand that Altec Marketing has inserted the better (metal/plastic) unit
from the ZX series into their Shuttle Plus kits for the US market only. But
the price for the US kit is also more then in other markets. I understand
their are a few other differences between the Shuttle Plus sold in the US
market and those from some other markets.

The Shuttle Plus purchased by a local flyer from Asia, is different in a
number of areas from the US version. This was all discussed on the RR forum
when the SHuttle Plus first came out in the US and people could buy them
from Asia for $170.00 while the US version was selling for about $190.00.
