I am about to start a new project and need some basswood. I use to buy mine from several places but no longer have the bookmarks. Like everyone else I am looking for the best price and service. Does anyone have sources for this material? I need lengths of up to 36 inches by 6 inches wide

At my local hobby shop. Could get it cheaper online, but the shipping is a killer unless you buy more than I usually care to at one time.
Tower has a lot...

I purchased my last batch from http://www.hobbylinc.com/prods/rce.htm. I looked around and found they had the best prices for the pieces I was looking for. Quick shipping as well. ymmv :)

Only source for basswood over here in Australia that I know of is Venetian blinds, got my last lot from the local tipperware party (Rubbish dump). Hey shouldn't I post this in the "look what I found thread" :D :D

This site like so many others only has 24 inch long sheets. I need some 36 inch long. Still looking for a source but thanks for the link.

Pat consider yourself lucky you still have a LHS, wish I did. I could use an online source if you had one.

Sorry, I missed the 36" requirement... http://www.towerhobbies.com/ only has the 24" Midwest stuff.
Why do you need 36"? Let's see... typical 1:1 board length = 12 feet... so you're building a 1/4 scale model?

Yes, I have it pretty tough with about 5 good LHS's within 10 miles...

You can get up to 48" length I believe.

crap, I missed the 36" part as well.. great thread anyways, new sources are always good..

Aircraftspruce is a great company, been doing business with them for 15+ years for applications outside of the aircraft industry.

Lately, I've been buying my wood at the local Ace and Home Depot. They now sell 1/4"+ square dowels. Home Depot also sells 1/8"x 36"x 7' doorskin plywood for about $8.00. And Ace Hardware gives away free yardsticks (1/8"x1"x36"). The yardsticks are clear straight wood that to me looks like basswood. It only take a little sanding to remove the markings.

I get my wood from a "local" organ manufacturer scrap pile. If not there then shipping crates that come in from Europe at work. A little time spent with the table saw and I have what I need.
