The element is nichrome wire as used in electric fire elements. There is a load of info on here somewhere, maybe in the Scale section.

Of course! nicrome wire. thanks. I will check threads. I just stuck some nicrome on a 12v battery.wow.....really hot....glad I was using insulated pliers. Dont try this at home..... further investigation needed.
