View Full Version : better motor for stampede?

I am wanting to replace the motor in my e-stampede(with esc). I have
replaced the wheel bushings with bearings, replaced the steering servo, and
went to a 16tooth pinion with the same size spur gear but filled all the
holes in the slipper clutch with the pucks. The truck works great for my use
(bashing), and is a great jumper especially after I got the suspension
sorted out a bit. I was looking through the new tower catalog and am trying
to decide what motor to upgrade to. It of course has the stock stinger 20
turn. I mainly want more high rpm power, but don't want to reduce the run
time. Anyone have a suggestion? The trinity motors look pretty good, was
leaning toward a 19turn with ball bearings but not sure what model to go
with. Also do the aftermarket motors come with the flat spot on the shaft
like the stocker?
Thanks for the info, I have learned a lot pretty quickly, and these things
are a riot to run. I stopped by the local rc airplane field the other day to
watch. Those are sweet too, maybe a plane is in my future too!

a hotter motor will reduce your runtime. Fact of life.
Your limitations are what your esc can handle. Find that out first.
Check the manual. Yeah, a 19 turn will be a touch faster than a 20, but not
that much.

I can tell ya that the Traxxas speed control is "rated" for 18turns and up,
but will handle a Trinity SpeedGem2 17turn with no problems. My Rustler
spent a couple of years set up like that, and much fun was had by all...
Still has good runtime because the motor has more efficiency than the
original Stinger.

I found a motor here in Texas that I believe started out as a Trinity 19turn
Chameleon2 Spec and was dyno-tuned by LightSpeed out of Arlington. They
replaced the brushes and brush springs with higher performance items and
then broke it in. It has a higher max RPM than the 17turn Speed Gem2 and I
alternate between it and a SpeedGem Pro Amber (a newer version of the
original SpeedGem2, uses built-in capacitors and P94-size brushes).

I have moved on from the standard Traxxas electronic speed control. I tried
a Novak Duster II forward-only model that I got cheap as it was being phased
out, and now I'm trying out a Mtroniks RV-15 (reversible, waterproof, tiny,
made in England, handles 15turns & up, only $45!). The full report will have
to wait until I get some more time to drive it and my new Losi XXX-T with a
GM Racing V3R...

(I'm being way too nice to myself, but I WAS good this year!)

All 540 can-size motors have the flat machined on the shaft, BTW.
