I am playing with an idea and need a power system for a 270lb payload with a 400sf wing area. Space is a problem (always) so it will have a folder prop. My first thought is a large prop (6') geared way down with a large axie (5340) and A123 cells I want 3.5min of flight. Any ideas are welcome.

10.8 oz/sq ft is pretty light wing loading for something that size. It sounds like it'll be a kite if there is any wind.

I have picture in my head of a 270lb slow stick. ;)

Tell us more so that we can help better.

If I didn't know any different, sounds like you're trying to power a hang glider with a human payload! A123's are probably robust enough for the high discharge rate, but you may not like the extra weight. Sounds like either the large AXi or a BAM from Neu motors may fit the bill. BAM already has the HD gearbox on it(probably a different gear ratio for your prop) and it's greater efficiency will slightly offset the added weight of the M1's. Although don't think there's a calculation on the Neu motors motor calc page for a 6' prop! :D My 2 cents

It is pretty much a powered parachute. I am trying to prove to an enginer that it can fly with off the shelf items and modeling know how. Btw it will be R/C.
About a year ago someone flew a man carrying plane powered with aa batteries, that is what I had in mind with the 6' prop.

Some of the ultralite props may be what you're looking for. Some even have variable pitch, might give you more powerband adjustability. Someone was commenting on my giant scale electric plane at Wallaby Ranch(hang gliders) and I said that you probably could power a hang glider with the right sized electric system. Cool=electric powered hang glider!

edfrules, I need a folder.(space constraints of deliveriy)You're at Wallaby Ranch, hang gliders are a secret passion of mine having come from an ultralight background. As for the power system if I/we come up with something that works then stick it on a HG for a self launch:)

You mean something like this?

Saw a glider come in the other day with the Mosquito unit strapped on. Should be electric!

That is why I am posting here! This is a start for what I am trying to do. Thanks.

Yeah ... Predator would be a nice idea ... gearing that perhaps? Heheheheeee ...

Yes mostley they gear it for use with paraglider, or 2x direct drive.

I've thought of several homebuilts that could be electrified with a big geared motor like an A150 or A200,.. cri-cri, pelican (flying wing, used a 9 horse motor), rutan single place quickie, the lazair ultralight (twin)..etc,.. there's lots of them.

Thanks, seems like every one of them use 270 volts. That first site is realy good.

Lessee, about 100 A123s?? (or maybe 300, for the current - that would be a 100S3P pack lol!)
