Can a kind soul give me some guidance on painting polycarbonate body
shells. What sort of paints can and can't be used etc? Can I use car
body paint or do I have to buy a special type.
Thanks,
Simon

You have to buy special paint, most model shops sell it.

you have to use Polycarbonate or Lexan specific paint. car body paint is
enamel (i think?!) and is like plastikote stuff and that tends to flake off.
It also doesn't stick well to shiny plastic.
Tamiya, Pactra and custom colour are pretty popular polycarbonate paints.
have a nice day

Hi
i will disagree, until recently i have always used tamiya lexan spray paint.
i have since painted two bodyshells using the small metal pots of humbrol
enamel brush paint. u can get them for £1 a pot at most model shops.
these bodies i have crashed etc and not one bit of paint has flaked off. yet
i know of many other racers who have used proper polycarbonate paint and it
flakes off in no time.
more important than paint type is preparation. All i do is wash the body
thouroughly with hot soapy water before painting. this removes the oil
residue left over from the molding process. if u want to be super careful
use an abrasive sponge just to roughen the shiny surface. (if u want clear
windows apply the window masks first so u dont scratch the window areas)
So there is no need to spend 4 times as much buying special paints as long
as prepare the body correctly.
Madaz.

Hello
If you have an airbrush use faskolor ( http://www.parmapse.com/faskolor.asp)
or you can us tamiya paints
(http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/paints/index.html)
and lastly Pactra paints.
faskolor thins with water and cleans up with water non toxic. good adhesion
to body.
tamiya same thing but flakes off or peels.
Pactra is the best problem being you have to thin it with acetone.
I have used all of them and with an airbrush I like to use pactra, but I
can't take the smell of it anymore and have switched to faskolor and enjoy
it.
If you don't have an airbrush than buy the spray cans from either pactra or
tamiya.
OHH yah remember to wash the body in a dish washing liquid like sunlight or
something like. dry it off with tissues as not to scratch the plastic and
use a good masking tape or masking film for the windows and stuff.
good luck
if yah need more info let me know.

Would disagree with paper masking tape. It does not have such a fine edge as
polyropylene or vinyl tapes. Best thing is a 3m product known as Magic Tape.

http://www.rcxotic.com/pkg-how/000002/index.shtml (comes with pictures
too! ) and if you would like to go the extra mile for your shell, check out
the tips on this page http://www.rcxotic.com/pkg-tips/tips_tech.shtml#body
Have fun & good luck!

I have used good old 3 m masking tape for years painting R/C car bodies and
real cars and trucks and have had zero problems with it.
I find that the people that have most troubles with the tape dont know how
to use it properly. Like burnishing the tape edge before painting.
