hi all,

i am in pakistan and am into glow planes. the weather is soon going to turn really windy and it'll mean an end to the flying season for atleast 3 months. so i was thinking of getting myself an rc car so as to keep myself busy.

the LHS has a HPI Savage 2.5 but i read on HPI's website that the model has been discontinued.

my question is that is the 2.5 a good model to start off with and is it ok to get a model which has been discontinued?

is there any other model that you guys would recommend instead of the 2.5? we don't have many hobby shops over here and the local rc club has a dirt track so will have to get an off roader.

plus i don't know if its relevant but karachi is a coastal city so hot, lots of dirt and very windy resulting in dirt flying around a lot sometimes and getting into equipment. if i can add anything else to help you guys recommend something do let me know.

The savage is discontinued becuase the new one has a larger engine yes? Maybe there's a lot of parts, apart from the engine which are interchangeable and you may even be able to fit the larger engine at a later date.
I have a Traxxas JATO 2.5 - the new model is a 3.3 but the parts are the same. The major difference is the engine and new wheels and tyres.

With all the dirt flying around, make sure you run a model with an air filter - most if not all off road rc vehicles have them as standard anyway. Obviously take time to clean the model after you've finished driving it for the day.

i've seen people cleaning their vehicles after a run with WD 40 at our club. would that suffice?

plus the LHS only has Kyosho, HPI and Tamiya cars so would like some recommendations of which model to get from any of these three manufacturers. i have no prior experience with nitro cars or electrics for that matter.

i would go for a tamiya ive got one and love it. mine is only a 2.3 and its fast. id recomend a buggy like mine , their really easy to use and very durible. they also handli very well (4wd) and are really aesy to find parts for.

you can check my blog ive got some pics of it their.

well our local club has a huge area available for running a vehicle but its all dirt and no grass. it can get a bit muddy as well.

so in terms of 4WD or 2WD, i have no idea as which would do what and benefit how? any insights would be welcome.

Nitro definitely.

stadium truck, MT, buggy or a truggy? again i have no idea. BTW whats the difference between a stadium and a monster truck? i don't plan to race it but just have some fun running it here and there but thats it. so what would be suitable?

don't want to spend more that 429.99 dollars which is incidentally the cost of a HPI Savage 4.6 RTR :)

Stadium trucks tend to be rear wheel drive, whereas monsters are usually 4WD with bigger wheels :). There are exceptions to the rule though.

so which one should i get if i just want to play around with it in dirt and maybe do some jumps.

Plus can off road vehicles be driven on road as well without changing their tires?

Yes. however, if the tyres have "pin" treads as opposed to large blocks of tread then the pins will rapidly wear out. Also trying to use paddle tyres (used on sand dunes) on the road is not a good idea either.

Yeah go for it.
You don't have to get the spare set, the stock tires will be fine on roads.
But, a paddle set will make things funner if you choose to get some ;)
