Be aware that Shipspotting strictly regulates the copyrights of the images for the owners. It isn't a problem to grab referance images, but be sure to ask first if you plan to post the photo anywhere else. ;)

Umi, There is a very good chance you found it with that shipspotting.com link. That is closer than anything I have seen. I found an old link on Ebay in the U.K. where there was a guy selling a October 1988 back issue of Model Boats Magazine that had an article called Miniature Merchantmen- M.V. Andes. I don't know if it is related, but it may be the original source of the plans

Hi
I just googled MV Andes after finding a box of letters that my father wrote to my mother during the war. He came back to Melbourne Australia on a ship that he called MV Andes. This was in 1945. Is it possible that this is the same ship?
He did a sketch of an area that was used for dining and showing films, it had a place for a band. Would the ship you found have had this facility (he describes the wood paneling etc). I am just generally interested, no other agenda.

Robyn,
small correction, the Andes you refer to was an elegant flagship built for Royal Mail Lines in 1939 and served from new until 1947 as a troop ship. It was a steam ship hence SS Andes but also known as RMS Andes when it carried mail to South America. It became a cruise ship in 1959 when liners ceased to be principal transport, and was sold in 1971. I had plans from a cruise brochure in the sixties, intending to build a model, but that never happened.
There was a predecessor built in 1913 which served until 1938.
The container ship is quite different.

The Hull lines of the Graupner Sydney star resemble this ship. The sydney star has a raised stern but the bow is very similar. Also the center crane does not exist on the Graupner model but to fabricate one would not be hard. There is a large gap between the center containers on the Sydney Star. There is enough room you could make a Sydney Star kit become the MV Andes if you wanted. Good luck no matter what you decide to build
