Testing an ESC

Is there anyway of testing a ESC without using the usual set-up of using a radio, Rx and motor? There are some local modelers here selling their ESCs online but I'm afraid they might slip me a broken one. I don't want to carry all that equipment around. Can I use a servo tester instead?

in theoty it should work, as the servo tester cant tell what is plugged into, and an esc wont know what is giving it instructions, it just knows its being instructed to do something by something, and will act in due course and obey (normally)

In practice it works too... Just tested with an older electronize ESC, 400 motor, multimeter and servo tester I built using plans/instructions from the internet.
