View Full Version : 3DNT clutch rotation direction

A friend of mine keeps burning the clutch liner of his 3DNT and he found
something odd about the clutch.
Can anybody confirm that the clutch of an Henseleit NT3D rotates differently
than a clutch in most helicopters. It doesn't matter if you have the left or
right turning heli because both clutches are different.
I hope this diagram looks like a clutch. It shows the clutch of the right
turning 3DNT with a clockwise engine.

On most helies this clutch would rotate counterclockwise (based on the way
the shoes bend out) but on the 3DNT this clutch rotates clockwise.
Does anybody know why this is? Is this the right way?
Thanks, Tim

Hallo Tim,
You are right, the clutch of a 3DNT counter rotates. In one of the first
series they had the problem that the clutch slipped, I think it was during
low headspeed aerobatics. This due to the hight-torque of the motor (OS 91).
Someone find out the slip-problem was solved by mounting a clockwise clutch
on a counter-clockwise running motor, the clutch has more 'bite' after it is
engaged. So in the later series the clutches were switched.
Don't known if this help's you much on the burned clutch problem. I just
recently got and build my NT, have just 6 flights on the clock. Only did
some running-in and tuning of the engine. What I did notice is that you must
be carefull at spooling up the head, don't open the throttle at once but
slowly, otherwise you hear a noise. Don't known where its comming from yet ,
tail belt, tailrotor or slipping clutch.
A good source of info on the NT is: www.rc-heli.de only lately they became a
bit difficult for getting a membership.
Greetings,
Rick
P.S.: Kom jij en je vriend ook uit nederland, ik wil met andere NT-vliegers
in Nederland in contact komen om ervaringen uit te wisselen.

Hey Rick, what 'noise' are you getting? Is it like a grating metal noise?
If it is, I think you may have a very slightly slipping fan.
I found that the fan can easily work itself loose on the engine and you
really have to get it so tight it feels like you're bending the engine! The
manual suggests not using stud/lock here.. But I'm still not sure if you can
get away with not having it.
