Anyone else up for building an X-bow Ulstein ship?

See the build up by NazaruddinHashim/dremel.

All the X bow ships are interesting... I am a bit tossed between the
Ulstein P or S series X bow and the OSCV 06L that is also being built in the Aker yards.

Hi folks

Found this thread while searching the web on the BOW.
It seems to be a very interresting ship design. :)
But don't be surprised, it is Ulstein / RR who made this design and they made some other great designs too.

At this time I'm going to build the Abeille (an UT515). Still not ready yet, I'm already looking for a new project. (It's allways the same... ;-)
http://home.arcor.de/hummelbrumm/gast/offshore/4421a.jpg

Think, one of the BOWs will be the next model on my workbench.
Unfortunately, one can get only poor informations on the net.
OK, there are may photos. And some PDFs on the official site of ulstein.
But PDF have only low res quality.Eeven though some PDFs includes some deck schematis, the poor quality prevents an usage as construction plan...

@ umi
you write

You mean information about the bow?
or the "other modells" ?
I'm allways in need of some better drawings

Hi Peter,

Welcome to RCgroups! :)

The plans I referred to were for another model build. Not one of the X-bow Ulstein ships.

What ships do you currently have in your fleet?

elektrofuzzi
Feb 03, 2008, 05:15 PM
Hi
THX for welcome :)

fleet?
nothing to speak of ...

This is my 2nd career as model builder. In the youth i had about 15 ship models, built on my fathers workbench.
And then? Hmm, you're getting older, other interests rising up ;-)
The only remaining ship was the "JEAN BART". A french 60-jears tug, half-built, and now the starting-point of my new modelling career.

http://home.arcor.de/hummelbrumm/gast/offshore/jeanbart.jpg

And then...
I got the modelling fever again ;-)
Searching for a new project in summer 2006, i found the "Abeille Bourbon" and the "Abeille Liberte". Two sisterships, stated on the french side of the canal of Dover as "open sea rescue and salvage tug". Launched in 10/05, you can find many fotos on the net. I found a -poor!- drawing at a french magazin and that was the start of my "Abeille" in 1/50 scale.

You can have a look at my foto-blog:
http://picasaweb.google.de/Peter.S.aus.O/BauberichtABEILLEBOURBON02

This is my complete fleet at this time. ( ok, the MOBs not mentioned...)

And now?
"Abeille" becomes to be finished...
And i'm looking for a new project ;-)
Such a BOW will be fine, but doku and drawings on the net are poor to build a model. And the shipyards are not willing to offer some details ...
Periodicaly i'm searching the net on the BOW to get some new information.
Therefore i found the posting of naza and your thread about.
But, naza did his ORCA by scratchbuilding, and apperently you have no docu about the BOW... :-(

ok, searching goes on...

Peter,

Very nice documentation of your Abielle build.
The lighting is wonderful.
All of the thrusters work using water pumps?
Were you able to achieve the spray you wanted from the Fire monitors?

THX to all :)

@ ghost
Ghost ??
There is a "ghost" in a german forum too? You ain't that ???
Indeed, Ul(-)Stein is very close with information. The "Hm-BOW" is a registered trademark, and i think they scan the web about terms like the BOW. I found a norwegian 3-D CAD forum with pictures of american aircraft carrieer, atomic submarines etc.... and a BOW: The picture of the BOW has to be removed by intervention of Ul(-)Stein, the atomic submarine is still there...
Crazy world...

@bigford
THX :)
But its not -only- my credit ;-)
The guys from UL an RR did this great design for a simple tug....

@umi
Thrusters are all working with the pumps, and they'r working well. This annoying whistle of the gears makes me crazy and this is an absolute noiseless solution.
About the fire monitors:
I can achieve a "broad band" sprinkle when using my deflectors on the monitors. That looks fine at the distance. Problem is the remaining residue on my decks :-(

"Abeille" is still not ready yet, the 2 Hydramarine cranes and all of the winches are missing. And at the moment there is no progress, cause there are some other projects in mind (eg. looking for a BOW ;-)

But there are some other nice pics that are not published in my album. Lets have a look at my archive and i'll post them here later.

Hmmm...
Grabbling on my PC....

There may be some other pics interresting for you....

1) an impressing pic of the original "Abeille"
(Photographer unknown, elsewhre from the web)
2) Floodlights with the 2 SMT modules with each 5 LED chips. Beware, the yard stick is metric !
3) and 4) are impressions of the workin FiFi at my model. Throwing range is about 4,5m at a diam. of 4,5 mm.
5) is a full-lighted sight, with the orange rear signalisation of "Towing", the red/white/red "Maneuver handicaped", a blue flashing light and at the bow a signalisation of a "long tug&tow" over 180 m length.
6) A flat "human eye" perspective at the pond of SMC-Wendlingen
7) Taken at Heemskerk (NL) by J. Lindemann. THX!
8) One of the best shoots of the original one! The "Abeille" makes a circle with its front thruster. Unfortunately i don't know who makes this pic. (A friendly fellow send me this foto, he get it elsewhere on the web...)
If i can get this pic at a high resolution: This will be a poster!
9) THX to Frank Pierre (who took this shoot), you can have an impression of the real relations between the neons and the floodlight. That's the reason, i'll try to spend a day/night illumination to my next project.

Aditionally i'll try to spend an "exhibition modus". That means, you can turn lightenig on without the R/C with simple manual toggle switches.
In combination with my "soft-start" Halos, this all will be ocure some probs...

You've seen the 3 short vids posted -hmmm..in the middle- of my foto-blog?

ok
enough for today...

Hi folks
Want some news?

Working on my new project will slow down progress of the ABEILLE.
Many details still missing, but main functions work fine.
This weekend, i had some trouble with RC-errors. Maybe it belongs to a 12V DC/DC changer i built in few weeks ago.
Nevertheless...

At SA we had a fine small "ofshore-meeting" :-)
Björn took out his big FARSTAD SUPPLIER and the ABEILLLE looks tiny beneath..
The SUPPLIER is built in a 1/40 scale and about 1.9m long.

Hi

Most things I can say are posted here above.

additional:
There is one ready model in France, and some 3-4 guys in france who are on the rail.

I got a -poor- drawing from here:
http://www.mrb-boutique.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=254

MRB is a french model magazin which publisized 2 articels about the ABEILLES in 10/11 2006. As I remember, the guy who wrote these articles is the same who did the drawings. And he was selling 2 photo CDs of the ABEILLE via MRB.

HOpe this will be to your benefit.

For those interested in the Bourbon Orca, I found this large PDF file containing a lot of information on the design, albeit it is in Norwegian:

http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wads.jsp?IA=NO2006000073&LANGUAGE=EN&ID=id00000004297344&VOL=62&DOC=002e41&WO=06/096066&WEEK=NA&TYPE=NA&DOC_TYPE=PDOC&PAGE=1

Here is an English translation of some of the important parts:

http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/fetch.jsp?SEARCH_IA=NO2006000073&DBSELECT=PCT&C=10&TOTAL=8&IDB=0&TYPE_FIELD=256&SERVER_TYPE=19-10&QUERY=(FP%2Fulstein)+&ELEMENT_SET=B&START=1&SORT=41249761-KEY&RESULT=4&DISP=25&FORM=SEP-0%2FHITNUM%2CB-ENG%2CDP%2CMC%2CAN%2CPA%2CABSUM-ENG&IDOC=889490&IA=NO2006000073&LANG=ENG&DISPLAY=DESC

It is a very interesting design. I wish I had more hours in the day to build all the models I would like to do!

Hi Umi

Nice to see U again after some time :-)

What about your projects?
Growing well ??

The DLC is running well at yet. I've added a selectable memory function to the switching inputs, and that will be the last edition to this software.

It works fine in "Demo mode" (without RC) when switched on.
And it works fine in normal RC mode, if you can provide up to 7 switching channels by eg. a comercial multiswitch.
If this was your question?

Peter,

The demo mode you posted video of looked great, but you said
it would cycle every 10 minutes. I was looking for a non cycling option.
Because I typically have all my channels in use.

Hi Umi

Demo mode cycles every ~90 secs.

If you run it in RC mode, you are in need of at least ONE free channel.
You can connect all the inputs to these switch, but then all functions will start at the same time.

Is this your idea of function ?

Yes that answers my queston about the cycle.

In RC mode, the lights are a single function, plus 7 more switches?
Or each type of light Halogen, flourescent, incandescent, plus four switches?
And the free channel needs to be proportional?

Hi Umi

You will have a look at the description here:
http://home.arcor.de/hummelbrumm/gast/DLC/DLC_e.pdf
(But it is the standard version, not the solution described below)

And hope i can realize whats your problem:
-you want the starting functions of demo mode (but not cycling all 90 secs.) switching demo on, running the ligths eg. 10 min, and then switching demo off.
-you are allways in need of free channels, spending 1 of them must be enough.

Ok,
I tried to modify the software of the DLC.
It's a little tricky, to merge the different operating modes together, and solving your problem (quickly) means to cancel the normal switching mode.

That means: Now you can switch on the demo start of all 21 outputs with 1 input. Functions will be powered on within ~45 secs, and then stay ON.
If input is switched of, functions poweres OFF in reverse matter within ~45 secs.
You need 1 switching channel at your radio, and a switching device at the receiver.

Is this what you have in mind?

(downsite: you can not control the functions separately, because this parts of software are deleted. But it seems that this is not of interrest for you..)

Peter

Hi Peter,

I will read through the manual when I get a chance later.
But yes, I really just want to provide power to the unit, and
have the lamps cycle on, then fizz, flicker, blink, till told to turn off.

This could be through on radio tx/rx switch on, or just a switch on the boat.

Thank you for the manual upload, I will read it through.

Hi Umi

You have to support 6-18V to the unit at first.
Then it will run in stand-by mode . (Flight-light is glowing up and down, nothing else)
If demo- input is connected to ground (!), all functions will start within ~45 secs. And if disconnected it wil shut down within ~45 secs.

Connection of demo-input is realized (at my BOW) with a hardware switch on the boat. But it can be realized also with a RC-switch.
I prefer to use a potential free relais solution to switch on/off. But it seems to be no problem to use comercial one, which uses noramly N-FET transistors to switch (ground) ON.
