View Full Version : Another question - is yellow motor wire always positive?

Hi all,

I have the stock 540 motor and the two leads are yellow and green - but my
ESC has yellow and blue. Is it safe to assume the yellow goes to yellow and
the blue goes to the green - there are no polarity markings on the motor
can.

Oh, and I checked the instructions again, it doesn't show a 3rd capacitor
across the two terminals on the motor - are you sure I need 3 capacitors?
What does this third one do? Won't it short out the motor to be across the
+/- terminals?

Basically yeah that's what I did and it worked fine.

In a motor it really doesn't matter that much if you have the wires reversed
when you press forward on your controller you car will go backwards.

And you will blow up the fets on your reversing ESC...

You will not harm anything by doing what you have in mind, But if you put
the motor in and the car runs backwards than you know you have to switch the
leads around the other way.
when you have it working properly I suggest marking the can with a screw
driver or something sharp to scar the metal can by making a ( + ) or/and
( - ) on the can according to the speed controller.

eg: if the yellow wire is + on the speed controller and goes to the green or
yellow wire on the can that is the positive side of your motor no matter
what color the lead is on the motor.

Anther thing I found useful is to mark the rotational direction of the
motor.

there are 2 type of capacitor. 1. is a polarized capacitor the other is a
non-polarized capacitor. the deference is the polarized capacitor has a (+)
positive and a (-)
leads its round like the end of a pencil or bigger ( round like a coke can).
the other type looks like a plastic or colored glass bead but has no
polarization. any lead can be positive negative.

Now what does it do well it stops your RX receiver from picking up stray
radio frequencies better known as (RF Noise) generated by the brushes on the
motor every time they create a spark or electrical arc. this in turn causes
something called a radio clitch, a momentary lose of control over the model.
not good!
so you see it is best to put the non- polarized capacitor on.

1. one from the can to the (-) terminal on the motor
2. one from the (+) terminal on the motor
3. one from (+) to (-) terminals on the motor.
