I've found a good source of LED's at my local dick smith's electronics shop. 3mm lights are AU $0.20 each for 3mm dia. They are available in orange, blue, green, yellow, and red. They also have many other LED's such as (my favourite) self cycling multicolour LED's. I power my LED's with a 1.5V button battery such as that found in car keys. The particular battery I have came from a computer motherboard and it had the bonus of the small holder for it. So I now have a nice little battery holder that powers my LED's fine:)
