Okay, okay....As a proud daddy I have to share one of my little guys first build. ;)
Late lasy night I walked through the kitchen and spied something tucked away in the corner on the counter (where the 4 yr old couldn't get to it.)
A plastic hull, some tape, a cardboard tube, and some Playmobile oars. Does it get any simpler than that? :) I think it's supposed to be a sampan...

You are going to have to watch your back at the TBA boat werks if your offspring are turning out quality work like that. I can see a takeover happening if you are not carefull ;)
Thats what i like to see, an 8 year old working on their own initiative and producing something from 'scrap' to their own design and thoughts. With some nurturing and encouragement, that's a future boat building modeller to rival Umi!
Well done young man, keep it up!...

That is a great build...This young man has been bitten by the ship model world and will probably continue. Well done indeed! And thanks dad! for giving him inspiration.

Thank you all. It darn near puts a tear in your eye. We shared the messages to him tonight and you could see him start to glow...He's a shy little boy. :)
He wanted me to let you know it has some things that "need to get fixed up some more."
Yes, I am afraid that my days as manager are numbered. We are already planning some sort of exchangable deckhouse for the two new Springers. I'll build up a base that fits over the hatch and the kids can go crazy building on top of that with some Bass wood, hot glue and paint. I figure I'll ease them into fiberglassing, sanding, and soldering parts for me about the time they want to learn how to drive... ;)

Great job!!!!!! :D :D :D
In these days of distractions (video games) where kids are entertained, it is great to see someone who actually uses thier brain to entertain themselves. It teaches them how to problem solve and create.
Thumbs up little buddy.

Thanks Guys! :)
Tonight a ball of twine and the scissors disappeared for a hour after dinner.
He re-rigged his pirate ship....again. He re-rigs that ship as if it makes a passage around CAPE HORN weekly (maybe it is?). He would have bankrupt Gustaf Erikson for sure!
Believe me, we do our best to keep tape and string on hand!

It's the simple things that will keep a kid entertained.
Christmas time- They will get board with an expensive toy quickly but the box will keep them busy for hours if not days.

Well, he was at it again...A piece of dowel, a drinking straw, a piece of felt (I hope mommy doesn't miss  ), and some hot glue. I was outside the whole time he was working on it. I had no idea until I saw the mess on the counter and smelled something hot which I tracked down to an unattended glue gun... :censored:
He chose an interesting flag of convenience. A few of our good friends from across the pond might recognize it. :D

Funny you should ask.....
I've been a BAD daddy. The past few days I holed up in the secret lab (shed) breathing horrible soldering fumes and brass grindings trying to build little bitty propeller thingys for my itty bitty tugboat.
Meanwhile.....inside where it's warm and dry (and sane) my wife pulled out some itty bitty unfinished wooden boats she got from the craft store. By the time I came in from the shed horribly burned, battered and frustrated, my 8 year old had produced a fine little brig with some felt, a marker, and a hot glue gun. Complete with flag I might add.
As proud as I was of that....I walked into the bathroom the other day and found he had attached his LEGO motor to the bottom of a little wooden tug I had made for him years ago. Notice the use of Mom's hair scruchies to attach said motor to the tug. I started laughing so hard I had to leave and get the camera. Pardon the fogged up picture. He was having a sauna that day ;)

Andy... you should be VERY honoured... and proud
Through your efforts, you have probably continued the art of model building for future generations.
Not only will your son grow up to be a modeller, but also his children.. and possibly his children's children.
Sir, i salute you.... and your VERY talented young son.

The 'skunkworks division' at TBA Boatwerks has been busy with a new design. The chief designer and project manager utilized an amazing range of materials found on the beach and dumpster to build a craft capable of competing for the x-prize.....er um....well the local raft race. (said designer / builder is hidden behind the main sail)
The crew put in a good effort and paddled the 1400' course (against a flood tide) with determination, finishing a strong 6th place (out of 6 entries :o ). Based on applause and cheers the assembled crowd voted the TBA entry as the popular favorite and most authentic looking...uh...ship(we were going for brig).
Now, if we could find the right size servos and adopted the boogey board propulsion system, we might have a keeper. This thing really moved downwind under sail (when unloaded). ;)

Your son shows imagination and skills that a Dad can help develope. I know grown men that are afraid to attempt building a kit, for fear they may do something wrong. We all start out like your son, with imagination, a can do attitude, and pride in our accomplishments. So go get your son all the materials he needs and teach him the use and care of tool. That's what Dad's are for, isn't it? ;)
