Hi guys
Is it possible to count the number of magnetic poles in a motor with out taking it apart?
When you turn a motor by hand you can feel the pull of the magnets as a sort of "notch" by counting how many "notches" per revolution is it possible to determine the no of poles?
Many thanks for any help with this

It's all relative to how much air gap there is between the magnets and your stator head width.
The easiest way is to open her up and find out.

Number of notches is not a good indicator.

Ok so if i open them up
is the number of magnets equal to the number of poles?

is the number of magnets equal to the number of poles? Not always. Sometimes 2 or 3 (or more) magnets are used as one pole. They should be grouped together if there are any gaps (not 100% coverage).
You may be able to tell on outrunners without disassembling the motor by running a magnet around the outside of the flux ring and seeing where it attracts and repels.
Good Luck!

You can also use a very strong magnet on the outside of the can. It will pull constantly to the can and one pole, but be repelled as it passes the opposite pole. /2 for pole count.
