Hello,

after I saw Benoit successful conversion of electric powered 88" Yak and Chris put the news of the 88.5" Extra, I knew I have to have it! :D

Yesterday I was very excited about the fact, that the CG is spot on (!) and I decided to go ahead and show my work. I wrote quite a lot on our slovenian forum modelarji.com (http://forum.modelarji.com/viewtopic.php?t=23717&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=10) (now on 17th page) and only somethin on 3drc (http://www.3drc.info/site/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=4906&start=120).

When I got plane in my house on 12th this month ... I felt like it was xmas that day!

http://static.album.email.si/3/1/438531/JKZiSjtnW5GeQDvNuzl9l.jpg

Here are some key photos. More can be found here (http://www.email.si/apps/es_gallery/a.php?p=0&id=44579)

I couldn't see "poor finish" on the spinner, so I spent 3 hours polishing it :)

http://static.album.email.si/1/1/444211/kvnsSoiHoh_3hV68O2L9K.jpg

Still not finished elevator servo, but you get the idea:

http://static.album.email.si/5/0/449250/Bt1h7zNLfyGkRGPw-XUWZ.jpg

Motor mount, extremely sturdy, 68 g + 70 g for the plate. All the dremeling saved approx 20 g (could be more or maybe even less...)

http://static.album.email.si/4/5/449245/r7hdPfgtwzx-FhZxmpRYZ.jpg

Rudder action is crazy fast. I added small support below the servo mount.

http://static.album.email.si/9/5/448195/XMdcE3fvugon8qjLCkL34.jpg

Joined tunel to the main plate on crucial places for more sturdy construction

Cells can be secured with a pair of straps (only the front one shown)

I will be watching to see how the power system works out. I have been thinking about building another Extra from my prototype jigs but Chris said I have one waiting on me at his shop. Im more into E-power than gas so I might have to go with a similar power system. IS that all the batteries it will take to power this thing?

Hello Mike,

at this time, these are the only cells I got now :o

For F3A-X type of flying I was advised to go for second Evolite pack (so 10S2P).

After Benoit's experience, for freestyle my best bet will be some very powerful 5000-6000 mAh 11S1P pack with RASA 25/12 (actually 25.59 inch diameter!). Yak cover is huge and it takes some thrust away. Extra can take such big prop. :)

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_0333_306.jpg

It is quite hard to see on the photo, but the prop is really big, I expect the rudder to be very effective :D

There are very little detailed photos of the Plettenberg Terminator motors, so here is what you get out of the box:

Motor 1023 g, this is 103 g more what Plettenberg says (http://www.plettenberg-motoren.com/german/Motoren/aussen/Terminator/Masse.htm)
Spiner 102.9 g
24/12 42.50 g + 42.90 g = 85.40 g
25/12 39.45 g + 39.25 g = 78.70 g

How much do the blades deflect backwards? Extra cowl is in the front pretty much straight, I have the spinner cap now 6 mm from the cowl away. Is this enough or do I need more space?

That`s my Predator 37/6.

Propeller is allmost straight when flying. But it depends on the propeller you use.

I see you moved the Elevator servo up front to move as much weight forward as you can. Are the batteries going to sit was they are in the pictures or will they need to be moved up into the motor box? The model was not designed for E-power but was designed by someone that knows all about E-powered models. LOL Im thinking about trying to build an ultra light weight Extra just for E power. I designed the model in metric so my material choice is somewhat limited here in the states but maybe I can knock off some weight and set the model up for E-power. I sure wish I could get some of that polar plywood from china in 2mm and 3mm.

Hello Mike,

CG is spot on 6" from the LE with this position of the cells:

http://static.album.email.si/3/4/449734/bCmx3xf3VB1-wp87oZ8i2.jpg

Elevator servo needs to be where I installed it! :)

I think this Extra can be made about 1 kg lighter for E-power.

Mike Hall

Thats awesome how the battery placement ended up. I know the model can be built lighter. My prototype was super light but then again I built it myself and it had a wood hatch that weighed almost nothing.

Hello Mihah,
You did already a very nice work with this wonderfull Extra Set-up!
As Wolf said, the prop sets itself very straight when turning. The Yak exemple is quite different with the wide radial engine cowl, it's better to put the prop a bit forward, like 2 to 3 cm to avoid to much drag on the cowl.
Here is on other experience I want to share:

Very nice conversion, we are preparing to install the Terminator in a 28% Extra soon. Have any of you guys compared the performance with the RASA folding props to a normal carbon fibre prop? i have done it on smaler setups with 23", they do accelerate nice but compared with normal prop it gave less trust.

Some "closing" operations today. Quite some time consuming work.

Depron pieces were used because the front of the model is closed due to the cooling.
I left opened motor mount and servo opening and limited the tunnel intake. I wanted as much possible air to be removed from the cells via the tunnel. I think this should work quite well.

This is the thing which concerns me quite a lot. Only 2-3 mm from the trailing edge of the blade to the canopy on RASA 25/12. RASA 24/12 about 5 mm :o

I do not want to have exprience from Benoit. Anyway, I will be ordering spare cowl and canopy :p

I shaved some weight off the Pilot and it came to 84.9 g with pylwood pieces. Pilot was attached with screws from below.

Cell Shield in place. I like this product from my Sebart Sukhoi S50. I will attached it on one of the 5/6S packs and try adjusting cut off voltage to 3.1 - 3.2 V/cell. Other pack shouldn't be far off.

http://static.album.email.si/8/2/454782/zy7-Qs5bwJkdTJPivshX5.jpg

In the apartment behind wing tube I added two 6/4 mm carbon tubes for use of velcro strap. The rubber lifts the pack just above the side edges. I didn't sanded them as this could weaken the structure here. The rubber doesn't slip on the cell shrink wrap at all.

http://static.album.email.si/8/3/454783/zfZUKsKNLNnSWz4uYHr5c.jpg

In the front I added also two carbon tubes. Anyway this position of the cells is for 3D.

http://static.album.email.si/8/6/454786/HLDjn-a8uvSsFNo0jgqZJ.jpg

I sanded down front edge, no problems here to weaken the structure. I used here other rubber for window sealing. Again, the cell shrink wrap doesn't slip on it. :D

http://static.album.email.si/8/7/454787/PyRW6LbmFzAzgbO5YikTC.jpg

5350 Evolites are quite short compared to other packs in this capacity range. This is how this pack can be attached. I need to buy velcro straps for skis this week (hopefully in other color!).

The tail servos pull at 6V about 3-3.5 A if I move them as fast as I can.

I got strange problem with my radio. I recently upgraded my Graupner/JR MX-22 with Spektrum module. All went without problems till I switched to high rates. If I added full rudder and pulled the elevator the rudder servo went nuts. I tried changing receiver and went to normal cells, but the problem was still present.

I changed to DX7 and all was OK.

Hmm?

To be realistic, about 8.3 kg with 10S Evolite. But I need to check. Anyway it my seem a lot on the paper (at least for me) but the plane feels quite light considering its size. I was quite surprised.

What did you use for threaded plugs in the ends of the CF motor mount tubes?

I was thinking of turning some barbs on a piece of aluminum rod, tapping bolt holes in the centers, and JB Welding (metal filled epoxy paste) those into the ends of the tubes.

Great idea with the weather/window stripping for the batteries. I've always used velcro strips under the packs with the velcro straps around the packs. That works great, but sometimes it can be a pain to pull the packs up from the velcro after a flight.

On your wings. Were do you find the plugs that you used on your servo cables to make the wings "Plug in". I've got several planes that I would like to rig up like that, but I cant find the plugs.

Sorry for the lack of response. We are changing DSL provider at home and from job I do have very little time.

All up weight is 8.3 kg +- few 10 grams.

Testing:

24.5x12 RASA
5700 rpm
100 A

In the CF tubes I used 16 mm plywood plugs with threaded blind nuts on the end. Plugs are ribbed, as glue 24h epoxy is used.

Wing plug in are from Modell Studio , www.modellstudio.cz (we have them here in our hobby shop).

Maiden is planned soon, yet there is no real hurry.

Hello to all :)

Sorry for not doing any update.

Yesterday it was the D-day! ;)

Maiden was really easy. My setup was 10S Evolite 5350 F3A and 25x12 prop. I think it is quite good power, but due to the wind picking up I was unable to test Evo 30 4500 11S (6S+5S) pack. :(

Model is flying GREAT, also the sound from the prop somehow surprised me :)

On May 11thwe got our first slovenian F3A competition of the season with some strong croatian pilots also attending. This was my very first F3A competition. I flew in "F3A BASIC class". I didn't practice a lot, only with my "purpose" Sebart Angel S 50 E Evo model about 10 practice flights. On the competition day, wind was very strong and I choose to fly with Extra. I never regret the decision, despite I did not flew a single F3A round up to the competition day. Only Quick flight of the program before competition. :o

I manage to get 2nd place behind 150 cc Extra of Rihard Jakopic.

1 Rihard Jakopič 1000 1000 1000
2 Miha Holc 992 990 991
3 Iztok Ogulin 877 916 896
4 Bogdan Makuc 814 888 851
5 Marko Veličkov 850 838 844
6 Jure Korber 818 846 832
7 Urban Simčič 806 673 739
8 Miroslav Karinja 698 669 684
9 Davor Balažić 583 766 675
10 Andrej Mlakar 488 798 643
11 Martin Treven 575 621 598
12 Nikola Matešić 514 621 567
13 Ivica Pilčič 427 641 534
14 Denis Vitez 538 509 524
15 Sandro Superina 298 232 265

For the next competitions I will fly in our F3M program which, basic is too simple. ;)

Great job, Miha! Very nice plane, and a beautiful flying site. Looks like quite a turn out, how many models were electric (just a guess)?

Thanks Jeffery! :)

In Basic, I was the only with electric powered plane.

In F3M there were in fact 3 electrics, but Alan choose to fly his Velox instead of EF Vanquish due to strong winds. There was another Vanquish very well placed (smallest plane on the competition) and one own build "Hypershade 90" from Marko Mencin. Very interesting plane, superb biild quality and top finish which can easily be mistaken for an ARF model!

Hypershade 90 is not Marko's first F3A model, it is the latest in the line. Very smooth flying from Marko! You can see the photos in the gallery link I gave in my post. OK, some time for browsing is needed, but I think you'll find them. :)

wow great plane :) I'm still flying planes under 50" wing span. One day I'll take the plunge and start flying the big boys :)

I think it is time to say something what is going on :)

Extra has about 70 flights so far and I am each time overly impressed by it's flight performance. When carefully trimming the plane, I needed only few percent of mixing RUD-ELE and RUD-AIL to keep the knife egde perfectly straight.
Once again my hat is off to the designer of this plane ;)

Now to the not so nice things which happened during last two months.

I replaced the 25x12 RASA prop down to 24x12 RASA. I found 3D performance still very good, but the flight precision aerobatics flight time increased slightly. Nice! :)

During a hot july afternoon I was pushing the drive really hard. 2 times 10S packs one after another and then immidiately also 11S pack, only time between the flights was my time needed to change the packs, max 5 minutes. On 11S the pullout is really amazing. How about video you say now. Well it looks like everyone is just too much busy enjoying watching instead of filming ;)
In the 3rd minute of flight I was doing hoovering about 10 m above the ground. I felt loss of power and in a second all power was lost. There was just enough height to level it out and "land" flat. Crack! Ouch! When it landed I let off the throttle and shortly after heard a beep. Controller overheated!

Here is the result:

The damage on the fuse was minimal.

I later repaired it and made forced cooling and rerouted cooling.

I was doing field charging via 1 xUltra Duo Plus 50 and 2 x BC-8 chargers all connected to 2 x 90 Ah Pb in parallel.

During hot days, aluminum covering is really helpful.

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1737_277.jpg

Here is my car, trusty old Peugeot 307 SW with 3 rear seats fully removed. Enough space to pack 2 more planes besides the Extra + all the charging equipment. However there is no passenger space left only on the roof :D

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse. I'm glad it is still in one piece and the damage is minimal. Such a beautiful plane, would hate to see it demolished.

Glad to hear it wasnt any worse then what it was. No crash is good, but to see a giant go down is always that much worse.

The strength of the ARF models (of all size) is just increadable now. With the light weight structures, one would expect a low duriability, but designers are doing a great job of making planes tough!!

I really pushed the model and the drive hard during early August. 33 deg Celsius I could empty pack after pack, even 11 S on hard flying, forced cooling is really doing it's work (BTW, both fans are powered by separate 500 mAh 2S1P , the AMP draw for both together is 0.7-0.8 A).

On 15th of August there is largest meeting of RC model airplanes (mostly scale) held in Lesce, Bled, Slovenia every year.

I prepared simple 4 minute freestyle aeromusical flying program (well I am flying aerobatic planes for single year now). I used once again 11S pack on 24x12 prop as the power is really amazing.

Before the show here with my friend Matej with his EF YAK on DL50 and ES Composite pipe.

warming up, low harrier, very easy with such great stable model and powerful drive; even here, when the the wind was picking up...

Well, on the the show, the wind really pickup up. When practicing 10 days before the show, almost every day I had only up to a little breeze. I was constantly charging back about 3300 - 3500 mAh. I flew more powerful and in the last 10 seconds before ending (low hoover) I got again no more juice. Extra landed again flat but now also with forward speed. I immidiately knew that the damage will be much worse that first time. My initial impression was again controller cut off, but it didn't made sense as the temperatures were about 10 degrees less than I flew. However the cells were relly hot, voltage about 3.3 V. I charged back 4492 mAh... :o

Damage in this crash:

Again broken prop (costing over 100$US)

and again only minimal (but still greater than first time) damage to the fuse (sorry for B&W photo):

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1779_154.jpg

not good for UC, aluminum soaked up almost all the energy

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1786_259.jpg

not good

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1783_136.jpg

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1784_469.jpg

small pieces on the aligning pin missing but found in the fuse later

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1788_279.jpg

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1789_208.jpg

absolutely no damage to the motor and the mount

http://forum.modelarji.com/datoteke/img_1787_287.jpg

I have enough skill to repair the model damage, but I had from beginning spare canopy and cowl. Now I am waiting for the new fairings and UC to arrive.

My father made only this photo after the crash, looks innocent from this angle and distance, doesn't it? :o

http://static.album.email.si/0/0/565400/YB6AB17pCXeSbif9ykqJg.jpg

I will be putting back the plane when the parts arrive, but anyway I won't be using 11S pack anymore, only 10 S on 25x12. This is enough power.

Well from both 24x12 props I can't use the blades ... one is from "old" series weigh is 44 gram, new one is only 33 gram...

But they look almost the same...
