Hi all, we I recieved an Art Hobby Hyper DL glider for Christmas, one of the planes I had on my list. I have never owned or flown a sailplane with ailerons and am hoping for some advice. I am nearly done with assembly and wonder if I should use the mixing functions in my radio to make the rudder work with the ailerons or if I should set it up with flapperons.
This is my second DL glider, the first being a Zip Tip from Hobby Lobby which is sort of a beater. Its a poly wing plane and it needed serious modification to be worth flying. Evrything I have read on the subject leads me to believe the Aileron ship is the way to go.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks, Polkaboy

Whether or not you choose to couple ailerons and rudder, the flap function should still be available.
I'm well aware that many people mix rudder with aileron (and there may be some designs that work well this way), but for the life of me I'll never understand this.
This mix serves to aid in a coordinated turn for a very narrow set of conditions and, should you ever need to use the rudder separately (as in a deliberate slip, or to coordinate a turn when top aileron is *required* to prevent further roll) you're either stuck or have to remember where the transmitter switch is to disable that function. Crabbing is another maneuver that won't work with the coupled surfaces.
Maybe I'm too old school, but learning to fly the model as it was truly designed to be flown will result in the pilot developing skills with the rudder that seem to be disappearing today and will result in, overall, a better flying plane.
There's a good reason that the full sized Ercoupe that originally came with coupled ailerons and rudder was quickly changed to a conventional setup. I can't even imagine what landing that thing in a crosswind was like. :)
My opinions only; flame retardent clothing now in place :0

Hi Bob, thanks for the input. I have never had a ship with ailerons and have read so much crap about this I thought I should ask the question. The plane doesn't have flaps, only ailerons, rudder and Elevator. I think I'll just take your advice and learn to fly with the left thumb. Being that it is a DL glider I am concerned that I won't have much time to react to what the plane does before its time to land or (ouch) crash!!!! The directions say you have to put 6-12 degrees of right rudder in for launch but not much else. I have a DLG now but its a poly ship and that I am comfortable with. We'll see how fast I can learn!
Thanks, Ron

HI. Ron
I guess I wasn't aware that the plane doesn't come with flaps - I assumed that like so many DLGs the ailerons are full span. You'll find that ailerons are no big deal to get used to, but there will be a learning curve getting used to how an aileron plane will turn compared to a poly two channel. I'm sure you'll do well and you'll find this glider to be a whole new experience. :)

Bob, that's the same one I built, similar to your Hybrid(but ail only). The Hyper WILL turn on ailerons alone, but not cleanly. You'll like it. It's a little heavy for DLG, but has a good glide.
