View Full Version : Discussion Water-Based Polyurethane and Sig Koverall

All,
I just finished covering a 90" Super Buccaneer using Sig Koverall.
I want to paint the plane before Spring, but do not want to use dope because the smells get into the house and disturbs the other half.
I was thinking about using water-based poly, like I've done in the past over foam and fiberglass cloth, but I am advised that it will not shrink the Koverall further.
Can anyone suggest something that doesn't smell like dope, but will give some shrinkage to the Koverall?
Thanks,
Paul

I was under the impression that Koverall was heat shrinkable, and didn't need any additional shrinkage ? Regardless, I have used MinWax PolyCrylic water based clear, both for attaching polyester fabric ( very similar stuff ), and then sealing the weave. The polyester that I use is a dress lining called "posh", and is heatshrinkable also.

My Spitty below was covered that way, and then spray painted with Rustoleum. ;) >

GeeBeeJim,
Thanks for the ideas. I had the day off, and the airframe just called to me to do something. So I gave it a coat of Minwax PolyCrylic (had it in stock). After a few hours, some spots loosened, but the iron shrunk them back again.
Two coats should seal the fabric, then Krylon color. It might just work!

That's a good sign Paul. You should be OK now.
I like your Buccaneer. I started one while still in High School in Brooklyn, but sadly :o , never finished it. I lived about a mile from Berkley, who kitted them at that time in Brooklyn, a long long time ago.
Who kits your 90 incher, and what are you powering it with. I might like to build one again sometimes. ;)

Jim,
Brilliant Spitfire.
The Buccaneer is from the short kit by Klarich Kits. The plans appear to be a copy of the original 1937 Berkeley plans with the Brooklyn NY address.
Going into the plane is an Astro FAI 40 with 3.1:1 gearbox spinning an 15x8 APCE prop. If I can get it to balance, I'll use six A123 cells. Otherwise 16xGP2200s up front.
Take care,
Paul
