Building a model at present and need 1.8kgs of lead ballast for the keel.
Thought about a fishing tackle shop but can't afford a second mortgage
buying line weight. Model shop costs are also high for such a lot. Any
suggestions as to a resonable cost alternative?

Try an ammunition or hunting store. I used 00 lead shot for my ballast,
it was 25$ US for about 20lbs. It is very fine and easy to use, just
pour it in to your hull and cover with thinned epoxy resin.

Trot down to your local tyre shop and ask for all the junked lead balancing
weights they have removed from rime priot to fitting a new tyre and
rebalancing the wheel - usually enough free to last several models. However,
if casting the lead be carefull to melt in the open as the dirty lead can
give off some very noxious if not hazardous fumes.

try lead flashing in a do-it-youraelf supermarket. It is clean whereas
if bought from a scrap metal dealer it is not.

A combination of the above techniques also works. I have cleaned (parts
cleaner then soap and water) tire weights, then placed them and secured with
resin.

Lead flashing is good either from a builder's merchant or second hand if you
know a builder (or have access to a Church roof - joke!!). Cur it roughly to
size with tin snips and resin it if you can't melt it in a mould,

Sorted, I went to the local shooting range (indoor) and they were all to
happy to give me all I needed. Now installed and resined over for security.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
