At our recent club auction i was given an old thermal glider ,on inspection i`ve noticed the ailerons cannot not move down by more than approx 3mm looking at the mechanics this has always been the case surly this can`t be right can anyone think why this is so, many thanks Harvey

Sounds right, just has mechanical differential built in. Do you know the name of the plane or can you post a pic so we can identify it?

Search on "aileron differential" and "adverse yaw" you'll see why this is desired. Many models simply use radio programming to achieve differential, but it is possibly (and relatively simple) to set up mechanically. It is also common on full-scale sailplanes..
