as far as ball bearings go, how does one determine its hop up quality?

The major difference between bushes and bearings is longevity for the part,
any part. A bonus is extra rotating speed potential, less friction so freer
running which can lead to less battery wear, longer run times, easier on the
motor etc etc.
Of course the above counts for replacing wheel hub bearings. If you also
replace the gearbox bearings you'll also benefit from better wear
characteristics of the gears, faster acceleration due to less friction etc
etc.
If you replace the steering bushes for bearings you'll get faster, eaiser,
more positive steering.
For all bush to bearing replacements you'll also benefit from cleaner parts,
less 'wear particles' from the bushes, less friction, freer operation of
movement etc etc .. ;)

Word of mouth.
Boca is known for the best bearings - racers and hardcore cash-spenders
only!
then there is a cloud in the middle where tamiya, losi, Dynamite all vie for
2nd place, then at the bottom are duratrax.
The duratrax bearings really should be good for your stadium truck though.
You only need to remember two things:
1. they dont like big tires (as in 5" dia. Mashers)
2. they dont like salty or muddy water. Just keep em reasonably clean. If
your going out bogging, then have at it! get it out of your system. just
tear down the car afterwards for a good scrubbing.

First of all, there is less friction, which means more speed, faster
steering, better wear in the difs.
There are several types of bearings. Metal shield, no shield, rubber
shield, teflon shield, and on and on...
For the axle bearings, (for wheels), use a double shielded rubber or
teflon sealed bearing. no need to clean and grease them and they last a long
time.
Same for the steering bearings.
When it comes to the difs, use single shield, rubber sealed bearings, or
get the doubles and pop one of the seals out. The open side goes toward the
inside of the gear case, so it gets lubed...
I buy aircraft grade bearings, they are anywhere from $2 to $8 a piece.
But you can find cheaper ones on Tower...STAY AWAY FROM METAL SHIELD!! They
will load up with grit in no time and blow out..

IMHO...
ball bearings are a necessity... should not even be considered a hop-up...
