Just got done ordering a HOB, Ziroli series, Texan from Advantage Hobbies :D and was wandering if anyone has built and or flown one yet? Already have everything that I need to get her in the air except for the retracts that I am considering putting on her. Has anyone flown the plane with retracts? Was wandering if that might be too much of a weight increase for the small plane or not. I hope that I did not buy a pig in the poke!

Thanks, Joe

Got it from Advantage Hobbies. Click on it at the upper lefthand corner of this page. It's a House of Balsa (Nick Ziroli Series) t6 texan that is made for electric motors. I figured that since Nick designed it, it should be a relatively decent model and should fly well. Laser cut wood and all the fixens! Should be an easy build. Just hope it flies well too!

I built this kit a year ago. The build is great. I put an E-Flite 450 brushless outrunner in it with a 3S 2100 Thunder power Lipo. Fly's really well. With this setup I can fly around for almost 15 minutes.

Glad to hear that Terry! I'm going to try and add retracts to it. Don't know if it will work or not but I figured that I would give it the ol' college try! Any problem areas that u encountered on the build? Any special fyi"s for me to know about?

Thanks, Joe

Everything is very straight forward. There weren't any problems. I had to put quite a bit more travel on the ailerons than the manual suggests to get the response I wanted. That's about it. I will try to get some pictures and post them for you.

Good Luck

Here's a few pictures. Good luck with your build. Show us some pic's especially if you put the retracts in.

What do you think about a mega 1615/3 on 2s or 3s lipo for this plane?

Anyone?.. Reason I ask is that I have one w/ a Jeti 36 amp ESC doing nothing and I'm willing to let Joe have it for a great price... I would think 2S would be sufficient with such a hot wind.. Unfortunately I believe Mrs. Hower has put the kabosh on Mr. Hower buying ANY new motors.

thanx for the pics Terry! A great looking warbird u got there! Just curious........
What kind of covering did u use and what kind of motor setup do u have in it? I have some very light covering. the name escapes me though. Don't want to use monokote because I think that the framework will bend or break when u heat it up and shrink it.
Will send some pics with the retracts once I get her done. It might be awhile though.

I used Hangar 9 Ultracote covering. I find it easier to work with. At first I wasn't sure whether Ultracote would be too heavy but it is just fine. I had no problem with the covering bending the framework.

I am using an E-Flite 450 with a 25 AMP ESC and a Thunderpower 3S2P 2100 battery. This provides more than enough power.

The spec's for the 450 is 890 kV 12 A cont and 18 A burst current. The weight is 2.5 oz.

I'm no expert but the Mega 1615/3 seems pretty powerful for the little guy. The weight is close (2.65 oz) so it might work.

I think the 450 is comparable to the Mega motors 1615/4. Anyone out there have a better idea than me

I'm sure the 1615/4 on eight NiMH cells or 3S lipo would be ideal but I'm thinking the 1615/3 on 2S would be similar. When I used to fly the wipa speedy the 1615/4 was almost a direct replacement for a 6V speed 400 on eight cells, it had a little more power but not a LOT more power.. Although not operating at peak efficiency, the 1615 /3 on 7 cells or 2S lipo should work pretty well?.. I'm trying to talk Santa into letting Joe get this motor/esc for X-mas

T'is the season. I think Santa should go for it. :)

I think Santa is bringing me the E-Flite 25 size Texan. I don't know why but I am attracted to the Texan's.

The HOB Texan flies fine. I built one 4 years ago, and finally flew it this past fall. It now has a good ol' brushed 400 geared setup in it, and first flew on a 370 geared inrunner bl.
The one thing I would do is reinforce the center wing formers with 1/8" balsa spars, or make doublers for them, full length. They are just too weak with that light wood, if anything less than a perfect landing occurs. I did that on my build, and still had to do a bit of minor surgery/recovering to the wing center after light damage. Probably would have really damaged the area, if it was built stock.

Since then, I've put a reducer on and it looks great. I'm running a 16/15/4 on mine. How does yours run with it?
