I can't wait to get started, I decided to go with black and transparent yellow Monokote maybe chrome ailerons too. For power I went with a BP A2217-9. Anyone else building one?

I would use Ultracote instead of Monokote. Ultracote is lighter and you will have a easier time with the wing tips.

:censored: I already ordered the Monokote with hopes that it would be more durable, maybe ultracote on the wingtips only?

If this is your first covering project, I would definitely use Ultracote. I have covered this model with Monokote. It is difficult to do the tips. You can probably get away with doing the tips only in Ultracote. I have done that also.

Covering

Recommended covering: Solite is the lightest. However, it punctures easily. I like to use transparent Ultracote. I use Monokote for my travel models because of its durability. The model flies well with almost any covering.

MAIN WING: Tack all four corners first; just like you are putting a sheet on a bed. Keep wrinkles to a minimum. Use low heat just in case you mess-up. This way you can pull the covering off and start over. Then tack the middle leading and trailing edge. Next tack the middle tip and middle/center of the center decking. Now turn the heat up. Run the iron up the main spar and start pulling the covering over the leading and trailing edge while ironing it down. Save the wing tips for last. I typically have about 2” of overhang on the covering when doing the wing. After you trim it off, you can use the leftover for the ailerons.

Wing Tips: I use a heat gun at high setting and divide the wrinkles evenly throughout the wing tip. I then use the heat to shrink out the wrinkles. At the same time I am pulling and stretching around the wing tip edge. I also use my fingers to brace the wing tip to prevent it from breaking. Use your thumb and index finger to grip the covering and the remaining fingers push the opposite side of the tip you are covering. If you have a hot grip glove it helps. Ultra cote is best, but you should be able to get good results with Monokote. The yellow plane below is covered with Monokote.

Very nice James, I just did a little more on mine, the wing is almost finished. Do the leading and trailing edges go all the way to the middle of the wing or do they end at the center ribs?

The sanding dust is flying, ready to cover soon. I have a BL-2217/9 for power, any mounting suggestions would be apreciated. Any down/right thrust? I have a Cellpro 3s 2100mah battery is that too heavy?

You can use the 2100 but it will be on the heavy side. I use a 1320 3 S. I have flown with a 2100 also, I just like to keep it light. I t will slow down better when it is lighter.

I do not put down thrust or right thrust in the SSX or X-Trainer when I build one. However depending on your flying skills, you may want to add some right thrust to counter the motor torque. When you fly the model the first time, trim the model to fly strait and level at half throttle. Then give it full throttle. If it climbs on full throttle, add a little down thrust until it maintains level flight.

You will need a stick mount motor mount if you do not have one. I have a new motor mount that will be available late next week.

Multi Color Covering

1. Cover the bottom of the wing first.
2. Make sure your glass is clean and smooth.
3. First, I cut the pieces of the covering. Make sure you cut the pieces with a 1/4” overlap.
4. Lay the pieces out onto the glass one at a time. Iron each piece to the glass as you move along. Do not forget the ¼” overlap.
5. Once you have all the pieces in place, turn the temperature up on the iron and seal all the seams.
6. Wait for the glass and covering to cool.
7. Peel the covering up from the glass. Do to put tension on the seams.
8. Place the covering on the wing and tack the four corners at the end ribs. Disregard the wing tips for now.
9. Tack the middle. Be sure to pull all the wrinkles out and continue tacking symmetrical points of the wing.
10. After all the wrinkles are gone, start at the center of the wing with the iron and in a sweeping motion work your way out to the last rib. Never apply pressure to the covering in the area between the ribs. Be careful to avoided applying too much heat to the seams.
11. Divide the wrinkles evenly throughout the wing tip. I then use the heat to shrink out the wrinkles. At the same time, I am pulling and stretching around the wing tip edge. I also use my fingers to brace the wing tip to prevent it from breaking. Use your thumb and index finger to grip the covering and the remaining fingers push the opposite side of the tip you are covering. If you have a hot grip glove, it helps. Ultracote Lite is best, but you should be able to get good results with Monokote.

I recommend covering the model with the Ultracote Lite.

Here are the stock numbers for the lite Ultracotes. Do not mistake standard transparent for lite transparent.

I'm building the X-Trainer. I bought it at Hodges Hobbies last weekend. I saw them on display at SEFF and really liked it. I've finally learned to fly my brushless Slow Stick and feel I'm ready to move up some.

I am, however, a little worried that the X-Trainer may be a step too far. Have you given any thought to version with a flatter bottom wing? Would that give a milder jump above the handling of the Slow Stick?

I haven't built a balsa plane since 1960 but I'm really enjoying it so far. Laser cut pieces are really nice!

I have hade other customers and friends move up from the Slow Stick to the X-Trainer with no problems. The X-Trainer is a very docile plane.

Finally had calm winds and no rain this morning. I flew a total of 5 packs without a hitch. Talk about stable, this one flies like a slowstick with more control. It is still very floaty, even with the clipped wings. This one is definitely a winner James!!!! Sorry about the crappy self shot cellphone pics. :D

JamesI am one example. I have only been flying for a few months and am already doing some aerbatics on the first flight!!! Docile is putting it lightly, it is a real pussycat in the air. Flies like a slowstick but way more precise. I would recomend low rates to start with.

Now that I looked at the pieces again, I should be able to repair it. The wing wasn't as bad as it looked once the covering was removed. I'll uncover the tail tomorrow. The plastic fuselage splintered into assorted pieces. The lipo hissed, and smoked but did not burn violently. Esc is junk, and 1 broken magnet in the motor.

Thanks,

I do not have an ARF yet. With the economy in the tank, we have been reluctant to order a large container of models. However, we are preparing to do it now. I may have ARF models by mid summer. I would be willing to build a trainer for you. I charge $120.00 for Labor and covering. You get 2 colors but no fancy mixes. I will cover the bottom in a different color than the top.

Thanks for the offer.
I went to the thread for the SSX build, and watched the construction video. The construction looks simple and straight forward. I downloaded the PDF instruction manual for the X-Trainer and read through it last night. It looks very similar to the SSX build.
I will give it a try, and order the kit. The only problem I may have is covering. But there are some club members that "Owe me" and may have to pay up!
The flying videos look great as well and it looks like the SSX handles wind pretty good too! I have flown my Slow Stick, and that wing is not wind friendly. :D

Has anyone done the internal lights within the wing for night flying yet? If so, What color of covering and lights make a good combo for top and bottom differential? Maybe some pics of how you set it up? Trying to decide if I want to do the Millenium kit of just continue taping lights on my regular wings. Thanks.
