i want to make flip out lights for an R/C car i have most o fthe details
worked out but i need some way to move it all whin i flip the switch hidden
under the car. is it possible to take a motor and when it is turnd on only
go a certan distance then when you turn it off make it retract again. Or
would it be easyer to re-wire a servo.
help!!!

You could hook a bar to the bottom of the two lights, and then attach a
micro servo to that bar. You also need a micro switch. When you press the
3rd channel button on your controller (providing that you have a 3 channel
radio), it'll move the servo which will pop the lights up and simultaneously
turn them on.

You may be able to get hold of a small solenoid with spring. This
moves to one position when power's applied and another when it's off.
The servo idea is better if you have a 3rd channel though, as a
solenoid draws power all the time it's on (a servo only draws a
noticeable amount of power when it's moving)

Video recorders often have them, so if you've got an old one lying
around you could get parts from that. Alternatively, try this (in the
uk, but i'm sure you can get similar stuff elsewhere):
