View Full Version : Discussion Spirit 2M needs a new wing...

I've got an old Spirit 2M that's missing its wing. I was wondering if it were at all possible to fit the Spirit Elite full house wing to it. I have no problem making minor/major mods to fit it. Has anyone attempted this yet?

It would depend on the chord length, but I don't see why it can't be done.

Isn't the Spirit Elite a 100" bird?

The 100" Spirits use a much larger fuse. Which isn't to say it can't be done- but the short tail moment might raise handling problems.

The Spirit Elite is a full house two meter. The Spirit 100 is a 100" wing span. You can check them all out at Tower (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=spirit). And while Tower lists the specs, I don't see wing cord listed. I would be very surprised if they was a difference in the wing cord between the Spirit and the Spirit Elite. If they did that it would have just increased their costs and I'm sure they aren't interested in doing that. :D

I have a Spirit Elite kit at home. If I can figure out what the wing cord is without having to build the thing this evening, I'll post it later.

One other thing (ok 2). Call up Tower and ask them what the wing cord is. And then ask them if they have a replacement kit for the wing only. I called them (actually Dyna-Flite) and asked about some missing parts from a BOT ARF I had picked up at a swap meet. And they couldn't just sell me the parts I needed I was told I would have to order a whole wing replacement. Maybe call Great Planes (not Tower, sorry) and get the wing cord and a wing replacement kit if there is such a thing.

Vulture, just measure the inboard cap rib, that'll be real close, within a hundredth of an inch or so.

Different airfoils, so I'm not sure how well the wing would sit in the wing saddle for you.

I can measure up the chord for you this evening, I have the Elite ARF hanging on the wall.

9 1/4 inch wing cord for the Spirit Elite kit

Steve your correct about the different airfoils. Spirit has a Selig 3010 Semi-Symmetrical (nearly flat) Airfoil and the Elite has New Selig/Ashok Gopalarathnam SA7035 Airfoil, Which Blends Into A SA7036 Airfoil At The Tips For Better Stability and Lift.

Adapting the fuse is easy, can be done with scrap balsa, or even stick-on foam tape.

rcflyer1984,
I did exactly what you are suggesting about a year ago when I busted my Spirit Elite fuselage. It flew just fine. I did not make any mods as I recall other than adjusting the cg.

rcflyer, I once made a foam cored balsa sheeted wing, SA 7035 triple taper, for a friend and he loved it, so many possibilities. Dave.

Gentlemen, this sat. I noticed a club mate with one of my Spirit 2m 7035 airfoiled wing's on it and asked him if he was happy with it, a resounding absolutely was his responce, so now I think I'll make one for myself, I've just been too busy doing other thing's and flying of course. Dave.

Dave,
What do you use to glue the sheeting to the core?
wood glue? 3m77? finishing epoxy?

John, I currently use MGS epoxy to sheet my core's, I really like it. It is pricey but it's the best I've ever used. It's thinner than West 105 sys., of course that would be my 2nd. choice.
Today i.e. I sheeted an Over The Edge core 30"x8.5"x6" both upper and lower skin's with carbon tissue on the last 1.5" of t/e with 50grams total of resin I don't think that's very much at all.
The resin is available from Aircraft Spruce and Speciality. Dave.

I've got one of each. The fuselages are totally different between the 2. There is no common parts between these 2 planes. The fuse for the Spirit Elite is about an inch and a half longer then the Spirit if you are measuring from the trailing edge of the wing. The Spirit Elite has about a 3/8" longer wing chord. This is all eyeball measurements without getting the ruler out. The stab and fin areas look about the same between the 2. They definetely do not have common fuselage construction or tail parts either for that matter such as the Spirit and Spectra do. The Elite fuselage is also a bit narrower and shorter. It has much less space inside. I'm sure you could strap the Elite wing onto a regular spirit without any trouble by adjusting the back end of the wing saddle a little bit.

I knew there were some differences between the two going in. I may just end up cutting some foam cores out and going from there instead. Or just modify the regular 2M wing for full house and take out most of the dihedral. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be sure update with what I end up doing.

Thanks,
Tim
