View Full Version : OS32/Raptor30 Muffler Failure ???

Hello,
I have a Raptor30 w/OS32 and flying for almost two years. I've had two similar mufflers (TT upgrade one-piece and MAVRIKK one
piece) fall apart on me recently. The MAVRIKK fell apart after two flights.

The part that falls off? The exhaust exit tube/stinger/thingie that you attach exhaust deflectors to. Both these mufflers had a
metal MAC exhaust deflector attached and both have suffered this same failure.

Question: If I install the metal deflector so that it's forward metal edge is against the muffler housing, could the heli
vibrations and exhaust heat cause the deflector edges to cut into or somehow weaken the area where the muffler body and the exhaust
exit tube/stinger/thingie is joined
together?

Has this happened to anybody else? I'm just trying to determine if it is a bad batch of mufflers or just me doing something stupid
(two pieces of
metal vibrating against each other)?

I've installed a new MAVRIKK muffler from HELIPROZ. This muffler came with a rubber Hobbico deflector? Hmmm?
Maybe that's a hint. I'll (try to) fly it over the holidays with a rubber deflector instead as a test.

Thanks for the help!

Tippy

I tried fitting a lovely home made stainless steel deflector to the original
Kyosho exhaust (crap) on me Nexus. That didn't work very well as the exit
stub was a little to short. So next I brought a Yusa muffler for the engine,
an MDS 38. The S/S deflector fitted perfectly to this muffler, but on the
second flight the vibration broke the end off the muffler. No amount of
gluing and screwing would secure the bugger properly again, for any length
of time.

In the end I brought a tuned pipe for the unit (what a difference in power
output!) and fitted one of the PTFE deflectors, end of problem. I also have
a similar deflector on the Nitro Pipe of me X-Cell and again no problems:-)

Phil Martin.

Try a different deflector, a rubber one for example, or do without it and
get used to cleaning the goop off the heli after you've been flying.
