View Full Version : TT36 dead - fix or buy an OS??

Hello fellow pilots!
Unfortunately I've a serious engine problem at the moment. I got my Raptor
30 (original version) in ARTF form with the TT 36 Heli engine and other than
some tuning problems early on, it's been okay for me - I'm just a beginner -
and I've never had the engine cut when I'm flying. My problem though, is
that I've just burnt out 3 glow plugs all of a sudden, and before I could
solve the problem, the engine must have overheated and the bearing cages
that hold the ball bearings spaced apart disintegrated with all the heat.
The little metal bits flying around in the engine then seem to have jammed
the piston near top dead center, and now it won't even turn over with the
plug removed (and I don't want to force it).
All the heat seems to have made getting the cylinder head bolts out very
difficult - and I can't get one of them out!! It's too tight and now
unfortunately the allen bolt is rounded out a little so the allen key is
loose when I try and take it out. I managed to get the 'sump' off and have
a look at the conrod and crankshaft. There is some internal wear, and there
is definitely wear on the cylinder bore walls. I expect this to cause lack
of compression and loss of power and will probably need to replace the
cylinder liner.
I'm trying to decide if it's worth fixing, or just getting a new OS 32 SXH
engine. Am I likely to get the parts I need? Or should I just get the OS
and leave the TT problems I've had behind?
The other thing bothering me is why it overheated. My fuel setup has never
changed, and until the plugs started blowing all of a sudden, they have
lasted me many many flights. I use a fuel filter, but not an air filter.
When the second and third plugs blew (about 6 minutes flying time each!) I
richened the fuel (both main and idle) but that doesn't seem to have made a
difference. Any ideas what may have caused it to run lean all of a sudden??
Thanks people for all your help!

The rapid consumption of glow plugs is often a sign that the
rear bearing is about to die. Bits of rust flake off the
bearing and shot-blast the glow plug filament.
Bearing rust is casued mainly by leaving engines 'wet' with
fuel. I normally fly the last tank of the day completely
empty, to try and leave the engine dry.
After run oil is a good idea, but I can't be arsed with it.
High nitro fuels are supposed to be worse. I know one flyer
who runs a small amount of 'straight' fuel (0% nitro) into his
tank and starts the motor after his last flight - he then uses
a fuel clamp to stop the motor 'dry'. Again, I can't be
bothered with the hassle of doing this.
I don't think O.S. bearings are any more rust-proof than TT
ones. My TT 36 has outlived previous O.S. 32 motors I've owned.
Martin.

Have a look at the new TT39. A fab engine from what I've read.

Get the OS, it's a wonderful engine and may outlast your current heli.
As for fixing it is always worth while to replace the bearings, if that's
all that's wrong. Once you get beyond that the parts cost more than a new
engine and you may not get "new" results.
I had a favorite YS 61 break a piston ring and damage the head, liner,
piston, and rod with tiny bits of hardened steel bouncing around. It was
very noisy but it still ran well enough to hover, what a miracle. The only
value left in the engine was the front bearing and the carburetor.

Hi people!
Thanks for the suggestions and comments. I ended up getting the OS engine
and I am very happy with it - very smooth and consistent indeed, and it was
so quick and easy to setup. The transistion from idle do main needle is
great!
Thanks again,
Bryce
Hahaha, this happened to me a couple of weeks ago. My R30 had been sitting
around all winter with no after run oil.
Was on my 3 third glow plug in two days(scratching head), trying to get the
engine to run correctly when I had total engine failure at an altitude of
around a metre, luckily. Main crankshaft bearing came apart. What a mess in
the crankcase and cylinder! This piston crown resembled a meat lovers pizza
LOL. Live and learn I guess.
Got a new TT39 the other day. TT seems to have done their homework on this
engine. Very impressive so far.

I had the same problem with the TT36, it would run great, lean out and get
hot and die.
It turned out the low speed idle mixture screw was loose enough that it
would spin shut.
I figured out where it should be, pulled it out and applied a touch of
loc-tite to the screw, reinstalled and adjusted it, and now it runs
sweeeett! I told the guys at ACE about it, and they mentioned that the
O-Ring may be worn on the needle valve, and sent me a few more, but it's
running so well now I hate to mess with it!
Another problem I had early on was the screw that holds the throttle rotor
in the carb. Luckily I didn't lose the screw, but it came loose enough to
where the throttle rotor would not operate correctly. A little loc-tite
there fixed the prob.
