View Full Version : ATTN Australian heli cam operators

If you are an operator or you have some interest in Heli cams and have
been approached at any time by any individual offering Heli cam setups
or consulting there is some information you should be aware of.
Please chime in here if this is the case and let me know of the offers
given.
The basis of the matter regards CASA regulations and regulations being
quoted or mis quoted to others.
Cheers

I am not absolutely sure of the info but The cam heli that Fred Proos
used at Shepparton was the first in Australia that has CASA permit and
approval. It was inspected by Are engineer etc. and as part of operating
conditions is that he carry atleats two fire extinguishers. This machine
I think is owned by CSIRO Queensland and is a part of their ortonimous
flying program.
CSIRO guys did come from Sydney to view the flight as they to are
looking to use helicopters in their program.

John, either get back on the pills or get the fuck off on holiday. Do
SOMETHING but stop wasting my fucking time. EVERY post I've opened of yours

Carry on like this and you could end up in a kill-file or two.

Hi Lindsay
I saw his rig.
Its different to the setup I run for still photos.
The Pan tilt is Video on his so is much bigger and that makes a lot of
diff as my stills cam heli is not underslung it has original skids and
height (Ergo60).
I can fit my standard canopy on, less the lower front cut out about
tray height and forward to the tip so it still has the nose
appearance..
Also like you say he has full UAV compliance and needs many additions
for compliance that Heli cams like mine dont as they dont operate by
visual remote or radio / gps navigation they are operated in sight the
same as a Model Aircraft, although they are rated as a small UAV to
comply with Subpart F not as a Model Aircraft .
CASA CAR 1998
Subpart F for UAV
101.234
(2) Nothing in this Subpart applies to the operation of a UAV if:
(a) while it is being operated, the person operating it keeps it in
sight; and
(b) it is operated in a way that complies with Subpart G
As you probably know Subpart G is regulations that also cover they
defined Model Aircraft for sporting use.
CASA does go some way to explaining this in introduction to the latest
101 but it is limited.
Quoting
"Micro UAVs are largely exempt from regulation while a small UAV may
be flown by an unqualified person in certain conditions without any
form of certification. A large UAV,on the other hand, is a de-facto
manned aircraft and must generally be certificated and registered and
its controllers qualified; "
Noteably the part
"while a small UAV may be flown by an unqualified person in certain
conditions without any form of certification."
The actual clarification appart from Subpart G rules is in the single
term "in sight" which is a pretty major differential
It's just they are regs and regs do not make evaluation that one point
of compliance is free and the other will cost $1000's of dollars.
Which I assume what Fred is doing with CSIRO as they can justify
scientific potential for funding a full UAV rig to be flow out of
ground operators sight..
Id like to get those who are operating just the simple Heli cam.
I thought it would be appropriate to ensure others who are involved
are aware of regs also, being Model Aircraft organisation represents
only sporting interest it leaves us to establish our own collective
knowledge that applies outside of Subpart G alone for Model Aircraft
folks.
Boeing and CSIRO dont have any interest in non remote operated UAV's
they are useless to them and being that we are under their
representation to date and they are in a world above us so are of
little to use to represent or inform us of what is applicable to us.
If there isnt really any other operators of this category then it
probably not worth going over all the ins and outs out here Ill just
deal with it as my own issue but thought Id put out a call to see if
we can find out who is doing this level of operation..
Cheers

Dave -
You try living in a climate like this and see if you don't go a bit strange
in the winter. While you're out filming the, likes of Curtis Y and Jason K, I
have to sit here with not a chance of flying for MONTHS to come.
To be honest, I replied to John without even noticing the topic, I fail to
see what harm was caused and in fact it has kept your topic current where it
had been ignored.
This is a hobby newsgroup, it is a serious hobby (I should know, I just got
MY arse chewed off on RunRyder for saying just that!) but a hobby is
supposed to be fun, and a little light-hearted banter is part of that fun.
Even the regulations for UAVs in Australia, serious topic as it may be, is
here only because of its relevance to a hobby, OK?
Cheers,

problem.

Because this is a forum for Topics under the group name and these
rubbish posts simply push Topical matter of the end of retention.
Not fair on those interested in the hobby and drop in to see what
going on and have to wade through a pile of off topic garbage and half
the decent posts gone in place of it.
To add to that any poster has the right to discuss a topic without
being harrased and as Banks will find out shortly that is on your
ISP's TOC and his not just mine.
Thirdly Ive requested people to read the topic but to expect them to
have to troll throught your and banks's off topic posts is a bit much
to expect so thats already screwed the purpose of the post anyway and
little likelyhood anyone will ever read enough of this peurile
posturing garbage to get to the posts that are about the actual topic.
And finally this is about air safety regulation that by cause and
effect stops things failing on the publics head and killing or maming
them and as a result of the regulation you still have the right to fly
your helicopter in public so if you think it is not important you are
a detriment to the hobby itself.

Youre entitled to have all the fun you like but not disrupt the intent
of anyone else to use the group and your actions show you are not
prepared to let others have fair use and think you have the right to
do as you wish even if at precludes others from having their use.

And the hobby is only still here because of the regulation that permit

Which topic is this aimed at? The 2p topic or the Jehova topic. Either one
isn't liely to see anyones ISP getting so bunged up they pull the plug.

Just a quickie here M: You've spoken about how you don't want John and Dave
to continue thier postings in this thread, and then you go on to say

Now maybe I'm wring, but this looks like you shot yourself in the foot.
Saying one thing and then arguing AGAINST it in the next sentence.

180 degrees out from where I'm sitting. The regulations don't PERMIT us to
exist as a hobby, they RESTRICT the hobby. The hobby was here LONG before
any regulations remember.

"the right to discuss a topic"
That is "Topical" not "Off topic" which can be assumed in it the right
to use the group for its purpose.

Thats what they say about prostitution also.
Chicken and Egg, Models or Full Scale
Full scale had regulation way back, did models exist before then, moot
point I feel.
This is now and now says you dont fit them you are not Permitted to
fly.
Anyway now moved to a relevant forum that is monitored so we can keep
it to the topic and Im not wasting professionals time wading through
looney tunes to get to the point of it.
Cheers
