As a long time scale modeler, I have wondered what IMAA is, why the IMAA exists and why there is such promotion of large scale models in the AMA including the magazine/newsletter Model Aviation.
I went to the website and read over the material and was surprised that IMAA is the largest special interest group in the AMA and that it is primarily interested in promoting building and informal recreational flying of large scale models as defined by IMAA( basically 80" minimum wingspan for monoplanes and 60" for multi-winged planes with similar dimensions for jets and autogyros. I was further surprised that competitive events are not a part of IMAA activity.
Maybe some day there will be a SIG for smaller electric scale models if there is enough interest in promoting it
