rc car batteries???

hey guys i need your expert opinions on whether or not RC car 7.2 volt packs would work on a zagi 400x without burning out the speed controler???

Hi,
7.2V is 7.2V. Doesn't matter where it comes from, the motor?prop determines how much current goes through the ESC
Kinda heavy though aren't they?

i think they might be one or two ounces heavier... the main attraction to using them for me would be that ive got four battery packs and with car batteries you can run them down, and then put them strait back on a 3 or 4 amp charge

The speed control should be fine. What packs are you currently using in your Zagi? If you are using 8-cell 600AE batteries that came with the Zagi then you are probably going to add at least 5-ounces to the plane. Keep in mind that 6-cell packs also won't spin the prop as fast as 8-cell packs. Couple that with the extra weight you will be adding to the plane and performance could get boring. Does your Zagi have a spar of some sort? It should if you are going to carry extra weight and do maneuvers.

One nice thing about Zagis is they are forgiving of failed experiments. If you do this and it doesn't fly well, chances are you won't have hurt anything.

with a 1500 mah sub C 6 cell pack(r/c car)
flies
flies calm and long

15 minutes at full throtle with mine

but don't expect much arobatics

like "realdeal" said the prop won't spin as fast because -less volts= less RPM, less speed=less performance

if all you want is longer run time and no flips or inverted flight use your car batts

or for a cheap fix cut one of the packs open and make 3 -8cell packs
(only if they are identical in mah and equal in usage)

but still they will be heavier than the batteries intended for a zagi

A great balsa plane will fly with 6-10 cells

I use 8 cell 1500 mha batteries from my local store for 19 bucks. good speed, good duration, no real aerobatics with the weight but still tons of fun. http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/biggrin.gif

Coming from 10 or so years of competition offroad and onroad racing, where sometimes we would peak our matched packs at 20A http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/eek.gif this is true, but at a cost. The life of these packs is short with such abuse. Fellow racers and myself used to replace our packs after about 2 to 4 months...usualy selling them to beginners in the sport for use in their Tamiya's etc. at a very reasonable price (we did tell them they were abused).
For long life and to avoid a cell/pack failure, give them the care you would give your 600AE's

i've flown my zagi with rc batteries and have not to this day burnt out my ESC. i've used 7cells and 8 cells and it runs nice, you just can't do any crazy aerobatics, and climb is slow...but it's entertaining and cheap. the other cheap alternative is to use the radio shack 9.6volt 1000mah nicad or 9.6v 1600 mah nimh packs, they sell for 19.99 and 24.99 respectively...and they are light, about 8ounces heavy.
