Hey guys-

I know several of you are full scale stick bangers also and thought I might see if anyone was interested in getting a couple (5 or 6) guys together to go in on a toy?

Piper Cub? Decathlon?

Somethin' just to putz around in?

Jeff, it sure would be fun. Not very probable for me right now, though. Also, where the plane is hangered would be up in the air since we're spread all across north Alabama. Maybe one day...

Yeh.. Where to hangar it would be an issue..

I'm trying to get 6ish guys to go in on a Cub.. Wouldn't be too terrible..

Are we talking a J-3 or a Super Cub? New or used?

While I'd love to have a Super Cub.. They are commanding pretty high prices these days..

I was thinking along the lines of a J3, J5 - something like that..

A really nice one can be had for around $35K..

The BEST number for a group of people to own an airplane is 8.. Of course, you can do it with less, but 8 seems to be the magic number..

With 8 people on a $45K J3 (which would be CHERRY)..

You'd be looking at a $5,700 inital buyin..
A Cub can be operated at $50 an hour ($44 is a more accurate number, but $50 would be good for the kitty)
Hangar rent for the nicest of hangars around here would run $350 a month ($44 a month per person @ 8)
Insurance on a Cub with a CFI in the group would probably be around $1,500 a year (or less - $190 a person)
Annual - $800 a year $100 per owner)...

So.. For an initial buyin of $5,700.. With roughly $350 in mx/insurance and then whatever you flew.... You'd have a Cub.. :)

Tram,
Great idea! I have been flying at Redstone Arsenal flying club and there is a Cub there for sale for $30k. I got my private ticket this year and have been dreaming of owning a plane ever since! I am starting tail wheel training at Moontown this weekend.

So who has an RV? I'll pay gas for a ride in one! :)

I just called the Flying Activity. The lady that answered the phone told me that the Cub has been gone for quite a while.

Fun stuff. I did mine in the Citabria at Pryor. You gonna be flying the 7AC Champ there?

Yes I'm flying the champ at moontown.

The cub at the flying club was sold on ebay last year...but someone has a flyer posted for sale on the wall in the office. Not sure of the owner.

Unfortunately the decathlon/citabria owner at Madison county exec.was killed last weekend in a plane crash...not sure why yet.

I've got an open invitation to ride along in the Citabria up at Madison County. A guy that works with the Shadow UAV training group at RSA has his aerobatic cert in it. :D

There's just something about getting into a plane with someone that I'm not reeeeally comfortable with and doing aerobatics... although I know it would be fun... I just don't want my name on the front page of the newspaper along with another blurb about me in the "obituaries".

For now I will wait for Andy to get his aerobatic certification! :p

Is it a Citabria out at Madison too? I thought it was a Decath.. Oh well.. Either way.. It was a nice looking bird the last time I saw it..

Horrible about the owner, I'm sure the plane will be sold and not for rent anymore..

I ran into Gordy Yesterday, the other owner of the Citabria and Decathlon yesterday. and he didn't say what he was going to do with either plane...but the decathlon is sitting in his hangar.
