Ok inspired by Toes thread on films with ships in them, I decided to do a bit of showdown sudden-death competition of fictional ships/boats. I tried to think of 32 fictional vessels off the top of my head but it wasn't working, so decided on the first 16; as 16 can round down to 8, then 4... all the way to the one winner. There maybe ships you feel are missing from the list, but I tried to keep a good mixed selection. Not just movies but also books, opera and poem and for your information number 20 on the list was from a computer game. Also tried to keep the mix good not only in time line but also type of vessel, be naval, civilian, etc. I was rather surprised that a quarter of the final list was submarines.

The Rules -
Just reply to this thread and type in the number of the category and which ship/boat/sub you're voting for, example:

5 Nautilus
6 SS Minnow
etc etc...

You get one vote each and once your vote is cast you're not allowed to change it. You do not have to vote for all categories.
I'll run the contest for a week to ten days after which I'll cast my vote, close this round and the winners start in Round 2. In the case of a tie my vote will break it, if my vote causes a tie I will not cast a vote for that category. Simple?
Enjoy!

What about the USS Haynes...DE 181? from the 1957 film "The Enemy Below", or the Merc Speed boat "Thunder" from the TV show "Thunder in Paradise"?

I'm puttin my vote on the Thunderchild. In the story she destroyed 2 of the 3 walkers before going down...Legitamatly sinking the first with cannons and then after she came under fire of the heat rays successfully rammed a second sending it below the surface with the Thunderchild....Farewell Thunderchild!

Did anyone ever make a conceptual model of this ship by chance?

In my humble opinion the armed vessel will always win unless the unarmed vessel is very very fast. 1. HMS Thunder Child 2. Tie - Poseidon faster but AQ had a torpedo. 3. USS Bedford - Nuclear weapons always win. 4. Red October (see #3). 5. Seaquest - trained Dolphin gives the edge. 6. Argonaut - With Gilligan on board the Minnow will sink self. 7. Black Pearl - but only if it can find the Dutchman. 8. Scruffy - As a member of TES I am obligated to vote for the tug.

In the book the HMS Thunder Child steams full ahead with her guns silent towards the three tripods chasing the refugee's steamer, a warship is unknown entity to the Martians and they try and use their gas attack, however the Thunder Child sails straight through the gas at which point the Martians decide to use the heat-rays. However even as the first heat-ray hit damages the Thunder Child but she is still able to ram the lead tripod and send it crumpling into the sea. The Thunder Child then turns and makes a run for the next tripod with her guns at full effect, however none of her shot are effective or miss (rather badly too) and the Martians intensify the use of their heat-rays which causes a some what fatal and catastrophic explosion on the Thunder Child, however the Captain is able to bring the Thunder Child close enough to the second tripod to bring it down when the Thunder Child's magazine blows. During the battle this has given the refugees a chance to escape and does attract the attention of three other 'vessels' of the Royal Navy to join the battle.

Surprised not to see a USS Thunder Child in the recent Steven Spielberg's version of War of the Worlds.
