Started this thread and will update with photos from the Pacific Work Boat Fishing Expo going on in Seattle this week. I will be there for the next 2 days playing boats and seeing what is new in the real marine world. Ron Burchetts pool is set up and several of us have boats there for the display and for the entertainment factor for the attendees. Always a great place to pickup literature with photos of detailed parts, drawings of vessels, and lots of other neat things that can be incorperated into the model world. Todays highlight will probebly the session on the floor with the skippers from the Discovery Channels hit show "Deadliest Catch" talking about their experiences and questions ( hecklers from the crews) from the audience. Will post some pictures when I get back and invite the others from this forum ( you know who you are :p ) that will be attending to do the same. :D

I've posted a few photos from this event on my blog: navagear.com (http://www.navagear.com/2007/11/pacific-marine-expo-report/)

I'm an utter newbie here, although I've installed RC in 1:20-scale battery-powered and live steam locomotives. After this Pacific Marine Expo, though, I've got a feeling I'm going to hanging around here a lot. I've been bitten by the RC boat bug...hard!

timflan,

Welcome to the hobby and the forum. I have only been on this forum since May and I have found the people on here to be everything I have come to expect in a model boater. They are generous in praise, and with knowledge and experience. You will find once you get involved at the local level meeting other modelers face to face that it is the norm.

You are very fortunate to be in the PNW. Those Seattle guys never cease to amaze me with the extraordinary and innovative things they do. From the photos on your website I get the feeling you think so too. I believe you can count on Keith and crew to keep you off the rocks. The forum is always here for you too.

There is something in this hobby for every boating taste and skill level. Just post what you are interested in, and what difficulty level you are comfortable with and the folks here will get you hooked up.

BTW: There is no cure for this particular bug bite. The side benefit for your wife/SO of this affliction is that you will be easy to find. You will either be at the workbench or pond.

Here are some photos from Saturdays events. No pictures from Friday as my truck decided it was not up to a long drive that day and had to go back home. :( :censored: Evertday there is different since some modelers only come for 1 or 2 days. So the variety of models changes daily. Thanks to Timflan for sharring some photos at his link. Predominately in the photos are Vic Lanzas fleet of Foss tugs ( some real others not) and his Foss 300 crane barge. The crane barge is a working model with the crane able to elevate, pickup/release cargo by R/C. Completely scratch built from photos. Incedently, the real Foss 300 is steam powered and used all the time for major heavy lift jobs around the Puget Sound and is one of the oldest steam powered cranes in use in the world.
My 1st hour at the show was spent going around and collecting all the goodies available that included: a lot magazines, flyers form marine architecs, pens, mugs, ect... Talked with those companies that know me and have supported the hobby and helped with some prodjects. By the time I returned it was time to play.... I mean demonstrate the models. In the water were a fire boat and some small tugs. One of the tugs is an Atlantic. This boat is used for the visitors to run. First up was the purse seiner demo were the main boat will launch the skiff and set the net ( about 25' )to form the "purse". This will be a couple of times each hour and is a big hit at this show! Once that was over I put the ST-FTG in with a few other of the small models. Ended up racing it around the pool with 3 other models causing the crowd to go oooohhh aaahhhh as we were creating a lot of chop and several "how did we not collide" senerios. Upgraded to the bigger tug James E ( earlier build here) with the Gotham ( Brooklyn ) and a ferry out on the water for a more subdued demo. Last boat to run would be the Wedell ( current build over at the scale section). This would be the first run with the decks inplace and multiple members of the group seeing the model opperate for the first time. Model performed flawlessly for almost an hour going forward/backwards, sideways, doing donuts and going around the pond sideways to the amazement of many ( man I love tractor tugs!). Durring this time all the big boats pretty much hit the water. Having 7 tugs in the pool ( 20x30') was interesting. Lots of horse power in a small area. What was fun though it gave the Wedell a chance to demonstrate the high manuverabillity of this tug in trafic. If you are in the Seattle area in mid November, this is a great place to play boats. You will need to be registered with the show or the local club to get you in (or spend $20.00 at the door) Not as many pictures as I would have like to have taken as I got too busy having fun. But here are some of the ones I did get.
