Diggs,
According to the New Forum rules, the poll goes up for a minimum of 10 days (looks like this one is 30 days), and must carry a 75% approval vote. Once the forum is posted, it goes on "probation" for 30 days. If there is limited use of the forum during the first 30 days, the mods have the option of deleting it.

Wow, seems crazy to not just do one. I'd love it if all the existing night flying threads from all the various forums were to get moved there. It would sure make it easy for everybody to get all the great info there is to be had.
If any of the people who voted "no" are people who've never actually flown at night, then I'm not sure their vote should count! It's a total blast!
Maybe the onset of winter is not the best time to ask for this vote because most people who fly at night don't do it as much when it's freezing cold outside, but it's a fantastic activity during the warm months. I just bought some light tape to put on my Katana Mini with floats so I can fly it off the snow at night. Oh man that'll be a blast.
Anyway, Boo to all the Nay Sayers who have never even tried it before!

I would agree with that in many areas of life, but certainly not in RC. The spirit of the hobby is all about progress... onward and upward! The envelope is always being pushed in every other sport, why not this one? If you've never gotten a bunch of guys together with glowires on combat wings and flown full-contact combat at night, I'm telling you it's a real thrill that's unlike anything else you've done.
We found that it's best to get some light sticks and stick them to your hat or make a ring and wear it like a halo, when you can't see your fellow pilots... accidents can happen! It's hilarious watching all these guys with halos on their heads trying to judge where the ground is close quarters combat. Put light wires on any visiting wives or children as well, just to be safe!

It's possible that those who voted "no" did so not because they are bitter or think night flying is stupid, but rather because they don't see a need for a seperate forum for every single subset of flying.
Perhaps we need a Slowstick forum? It is a popular plane afterall. Or maybe a forum dedicated to winter flying? Or how about a forum that deals strictly with with flying in windy conditions?

I see a major need for a night flying forum!
Even though we could just post threads about night flying in other forums, but having a specific forum for it would make things a little more organized, and a lot easier to access. Kinda like how it is easier to have several different compartments in you flight box to keep different parts/tools in, verses having one huge box that you just toss all your parts/tools in, and have to dig through it to find the thing you need...

Wow, I didn't know there was anybody on RC Groups with over 10,000 posts. There ought to be some cool gift for uber senior members of RCGroups, like, oh, I know, how 'bout your own forum?! A forum for people with over 10,000 posts!
:p
It's definitely not gonna get as much traffic as a night flight forum. :D
(I gotta poke fun at the "no"bies - no offense intended)
It's really no big deal if there isn't a forum for night flying, it would just be cool and convenient. The search engine on RCGroups is good enough that you can find anything you're interested in.
I have no idea of knowing how many RCers actually do it. I'm willing to bet though that if there were a visible forum that people could see and venture to visit, that it would increase the number of those who would consider it an option - people who otherwise may never have realized it was even possible.
What's the harm in that?
For anybody who wants to see a pylon plane with glowire, check out a thread I started on it back in '03 when I first tried it out. My icon comes from this plane. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183457
The new ElTape is stiffer and holds its shape better, but can't bend any direction like the ElWire can. ElTape is wider and therefore more visible at a distance. I think the tape is going to be great for long wing edges and the fuse, and will look great on larger planes. I've got 4 strips of it coming and was thinking Katana Mini, but I may actually have enough tape to outfit my Fliton Extra 330 Freestyle, a 60" 3D Plane.
I will post photos in another forum someplace when it's done... Unless we get a dedicated forum, then I'll post everything there.

Night flying is one of the ABSOLUTE fun things you can do with a RC airplane.
And the best thing about it is you dont need performance airplanes to do it. Just a simple glow trainer or slowstick with lights is fun.
Here we've flown just about everything with lights on it. Helicopters, sailplanes, hotliners, 3D planes, glow trainers, slowsticks.

Bryan, if you're ever in the Utah area, let us know, we'd be happy to set up a special night combat session for ya. Any excuse we can get, we'll take it!
Some of us are coming down to the Arizona Electric Festival and could bring night combat wings if you're going to that show. They supposedly are only flying until 4 p.m., but all we'd need to do is find a club member who'd open up for us at night. PM me if either option works for you.

The Night Flying posts are already happening they just are scattered though many other sites at RC Groups. It would be nice to get the posts together to promote the technology needed to fly at night. It may bring in more advertising for RC Groups and encourage manufacturers to design and make more lighting systems.
If a Night Flying Forum site doesn't have a strong following it doesn't hurt anyone or cost anything and the new forum will die on it's own. I think it will do as well as some of the other forums already on the RC Groups. There is increasing interest in our area due to the availability of flying fields at night that are dominated by sports in the day.
This is not the big time of year for night flying because of the colder temperatures but it is dark earlier and a flight in the yard after work may need lights due to the shorter daylight hours.
The reason I started the Christmas lights for night flying thread at our UFO club site, was the Christmas lights are only available this time of year so they need to get stocked up now for the summer night flying. There is no central place to post the information and so everyone was re-inventing the wheel. It would be nice to have a place to share the information that people could find it.
We have had the mosquito problem too. Maybe we can post some ideas of how to deal with that problem too on a new site.
Lee
PS "Wind of Change" flies with us and likes to do head to head wing combat in the dark.

That’s a really great idea Tic.
However if enough people vote "no" like you I would have to wade through the high performance portion of this site to read about your model. Bet most would never know about it at all, not that you really care from your attitude.
Like said before there are a lot of posts about night flying on this site. They are just all over the grid and really need a home.
This is not the big time of year for night flying because of the colder temperatures
I for one just started to fly at night for the very reason it gets darker sooner.
Better to put put around at night with a RC plane then to sit indoors on a sim.
I had one fellow come up to me who thought my plane was a UFO, that’s a plus!

Oh man, you should have been at SEFF, Tic. One of the Dutch guys (Roland or Tjakko) flew his Simprop LiftOff (I think) with little more than 4 LEDs at night. Full vertical climb and dives, decent aerobatics, some nice looooow passes, and a perfect landing made this night flight a sight to behold. The coolest part was that wicked whistle as those 4 lights sped straight down before the pullout. I'm not sure I'd ever have the guts to do night F5B, though.

Hey, I think night flying is cool.. Does it need it's own forum?... Heck, F5B doesn't even have it's own forum!.. I cared enough to vote so don't say I don't care.. You can't put up a poll and then be pissed if people don't vote the way YOU want them to!

Nov 14, 2007, 09:48 PM
Welcome back Tic.... we missed you... I think.
I know I'm not pissed I'm just surprised people are apposed to some sort of forum that would categories the night flying posts all over this web site. It would help unclutter so many of the posts, and cross posts in say Parkes, Electric talk and the likes.
You do have a place for your F5Bs, Hotliners and the likes. Its all lumped into the High Performance section. If you feel a need for say "extreme" speed prop planes F5Bs or whatever, by all means go through the motions and get it done. I know I would not vote "No" just because I don't fly one.
Sometimes sites like this are not about “me” but about others as well.

December 12th, good grief that's a LONG time for voting. If political elections had open votes this long most candidates would weed themselves out of the running. Most politicians couldn't keep up the false "good guy" persona that long. :p

What kind of lights have you got on that plane?
Here is a post that could be on a Night flying site:
I flew with the Christmas lights on a new delta and then a 36" Pinata flying wing that is a club combat wing design around here. The plane has been clocked at 70+ mph with a speed gun. The 36" Pinata is my new favorite night flying plane. I love aerobatics with lights. I can roll about 3x second when I dare. I toned it down a little for the dark.
It was dark enough for night flying and lights by 6:45 PM. By 8:30 it was very dark even with the moon.
We were able to get some good video segments but there is very little in the background to use a s a reference for speed. The Christmas lights are bright and easier to see than the glow sticks. I had a glow stick on the plane so I could find the plane if the power failed. It added weight and could hardly compete with the new bright lights.
We extend the hours we can fly and the fields we can fly at if we have dependable lighting systems.

Hi Lee,
I used a chain of 40 X-Mas Outside-LEDs, with a total length of 4m.
As you can see, the 3D vectorized kite (I never use rudders :D :D ) with its trapezoid shape has a wingspan of 1,80m and a total flightweight of 500g. The '40 LED X-Mas Chain' was cheap to buy (10 Dollars) and is very easy to mount, with an extra low energy consumption of only 500mA.
Using a 1S-1000mA-Lipo, more than 1 hour (de-)lighted nightflights are possible... :D

There seem to be two night-flying thread requests. When will we know if a real "Night Flying" forum is active?
