The CustomCDR edf 40 motor is now available..
Note: The motor shaft is 2mm. You must open up the hub of the fan with a 5/64 drill bit. It only takes about a minute and it runs through the stock 1.5mm. bore straight and true..
It is priced at $45.
Here are some test numbers. As you can see, it is running at high power levels that up until now, were not very practical due to the heat generated by the small inrunners.
3s 910
59,523 rpm
10.65 volts
13.24 amps
141 watts
Pm me for ordering info..
Thanks,
Jon

Interesting and tiny motor.. but what Impellor holds those RPMS ??
the GWS one ! ?? What ESC holds sync?
and while here, what thrust #'s does that produce?

The gws fan holds up just fine. It is a 6 pole motor, so just about any sc should work(I use castle creations phoenix and thunderbirds with great success.)
And I am getting about 7 oz. of thrust..

Hi Jon,
Is the GWS impeller just a press fit on your motor? It won't come loose as the motor shaft heats up?
Thanks. Rich Graf

Would this motor work in a gws EDF-50 since the 40 and 50 use similair size motors?

Yes, about any, except for garbage ones like GP Electriflarbage. :D They can barely start a 2 pole motor, and not a 6 pole. Sometimes, if you spin it as fast as you can by hand, and then hit throttle, they will start. That gets old quick. Man, all those poor hobby shops who can't even give those things away now, after paying top dollar for them.
Not exactly thrilled with CC either, but they do start motors well, and seem to be about the best for playing the twin game. Interesting to see if it works with these motors. On EDF40 and 50 twin setups with Feigaos, where I can afford to derate the ESC a bit, the Tbird18 and P25 do a good job of running 2 fans on 1 ESC. The advantages are not suffering from identical ESCs with non-identical perfomance (Tbird9 guilty of that one) and both fans will hit LVC at the same time.
Bare, I'd imagine drilling the impellors to the larger size would help hold them on. Still, I'd probably use the heli adapter mod, drilling those adapters out to the new size, and then cross-tap through the original anemic Allen set screw threads, to use larger size Allen head set screws.
Part of the key is heat. The reason adapters fly off of the Feigoas is they get too hot, and soften. I didn't want to believe it, but proved it. When it takes pounds to force them on, and takes only ounces of thrust to come off, they softened. I developed a dirt cheap method of CA gluing on E-Z link clips, which works well. Very little gripping area, but since its high-strength spring steel, it dosen't melt like plastic.

If I can ever scrape up a bit of loot, I'd like to try all of your fan motors Morph.
Not entirely thrilled with the fact that the Feigaos are literally pushed to the failure point, to get good performance.
I've had a few identical motors with unequal performance, due to the inexact method that they use to jam pack :D the windings in. And yeah, yeah, I already know the Medusas are supposed to be a bit better at this folks, but still basically the same thing as the Feigao.

Bill you have run 2 Brushless motors off of one ESC? I have a BN-2 EDF that I am getting ready to put back together from a crash and looking to get some of these motors for a good pump up. I currently fly Feigao 5688's in it. Good 2S performance but looking to get a little more from her as now she will be a tosser as her nose gear suffered severe damage in the crash.
Jason
Edit- Might add had been flying on twin esc's and if LVC was hit made for a very nervous recovery (rudder inputs) till I could get her re-armed and down.

For the EDF40 and 50:
The 18 worked right off the bat, with no tweaks, since you can't change anything anyways.
I believe I had to change the timing advance on the 25, and then it worked fine.
I used the P25 on an EDF55 with Himax 2015-4100 motors on a twin, and it worked fine on default settings. 5 min at full power and no smoke, after several flights. It is pushing the ESC in this setup, since the timing offset of the motors adds load on the ESC, as well as just being 2 motors on 1 ESC.
I'd probably just use the 18, although admittedly I don't have much time on it. I think it has the same fet count as the 25. Power electronic manufacturers are known to derate the software, to create lower power versions of a power module, when it really has the same current carrying capability of the more expensive version. Marketing game.

So, how much more improvement over the stock GWS EDF-40 will be had. BTW, this is interesting

I would love to see if would produce enough thrust to counter the rotor torque of this

Wow! an FP with a Jet tail. That's an interesting Body on it.
Although that's an impressive bit of work.... I'll keep a Prop on the tail of Mine It's hard enough to fly.

Well, it is not even comparable.. The stock motor draws 1.8 amps on 3s for a total of 19 watts. Our motor pulls 13.4 amps for 141 watts.. The stock setup produces around 2 oz. of thrust and ours produces 7..

Actually, Im trying to get the EDF40 to act as a notar system in my MD520 micro heli. There isnt enough power or air movement to counter the main rotor torque with the standard GWS EDF-40. It will slow down the tail movement but nowhere near whats needed to fly the heli. With a little more thrust I think it could be done. From the sound of seems like this has a lot more thrust which may be the ticket Im looking for. We have used the EDF 40 as a fenestron tail in the Comanche and the AS365 Dauphin Heli with success. If I could get one of these and get it to work, whoever makes these
may have to make a bunch of em.

All remaining motors will ship this week.. I decided to use a different shaft than I had originally planned. The wait for the new shafts delayed me a bit..

Morphs, You still have some of these in? I am starting a build from plans that is designed around the GWS-40 and could use a motor with these stats. BTW my EDF-50 BN-2 still sits in the closet from its crash. Motors still $45?

Jon,
On May 28th you told me my motor was in the mail. It's June 12th now and I still have no motor. What gives? Do you have a tracking number? I only live three states away from you.
