I know I'm not giving very much information but I recall their being a black covered book with white text, pretty plane front cover, on model aircraft design, aerodynamics etc...

Would someone be kind to suggest a title?

I have a birthday coming up and would like to add it to my wife's list.

The only one that I can think of that would match your description is Model Aircraft Aerodynamics by Martin Simons. It should be on Amazon.
