I have used the Krylon H2O and found it heavy (weighs a lot) and taking long to dry but will not harm any foam no mater how much you goop it on. It covers nice and holds up well.

Lots of people have good luck with the Testors model paint for plastic so I think the Krylon plastic will be much the same.

But I tried the $0.98 Walmart spray and found that it will not harm foam if you spray lightly and keep it far enough away. It seems to weigh less and covers nicely.

This was all on EPS. I have no idea what EPP will do but it will be resistant to just about every paint.

Krylon Fusion ate some of my EPS and Depron. If you spray from a distance and use light coats it works OK. I think EPP is pretty solvent resistant, so most spraypaints should work on it(although you should always test it first).

I use Testors paint on Depron. Covers well and is light.

My best results are with testors spray cans. I tried Krylon H20 but the coverage was terrible, was splotchy, ran super easy, and only looked good in flight.

For painting my foamies (only sparingly, though) I use Krylon "Fusion" spray paint. It is designed to adhere to plastics and it sticks like it was made especially for the Elapor foam my two Multiplex planes are made of, and whatever the foam type they use in the Hobby Zone Super Cub. Excellent, but you have to be careful of the overspray.

I use it sparingly because I'm sure it adds weight to my models. Mostly I paint some of the underside of the fuselage and wings so that I can see the plane silhouetted against the clouds. The canopy usually gets a dose of "Fusion", too.

Available almost anywhere spray paint is sold...Lowe's, Ace, Home Depot, Wal-mart. Colors are limited.

Also, the acrylic craft paint they sell at Wal-Mart adheres very well to foam. It goes on with a brush and is pretty heavy. It is called "Apple Barrel-Plaid". Comes in lots of colors and shades.

Is there a spray on clear coat available that would "seal" a foam plastic surface from ordinary dirt, dust, grease, grime and grit?
My ignorance of foam types is almost complete! What are EPP/EPS foams and how do you tell the difference? I've put together several foamies, but I guess I don't know some of the basics. I've noticed that the plastic of some of my planes is apparently comprised of compressed plastic beads, but others, such as the wing of my GWS Slow Stick are of different stuff. Is there a link or website I could go to for this basic information? Thanks for your help ... I need all I can get.

I have used Testors ( low quality ), Boyds ( medium quality ) and Model Master ( high quality) on depron and foam without any melting.

Model Master leaves the best finish of the three.

I recently got a can of Design Master spraypaint at Michael's craft store. It seems to work on Depron just fine(although I've only tried one color so test it first). It was $5ish and is a full size can, so unlike the Testors stuff it's a decent value. The only downside is it's made for painting floral arangments, so color selection is a bit odd.

Anyone bother to tell this guy that there was a FORUM made especially for this type of question. :o

This is the "Foam Kit" forum.

Anything you want to know about painting and finishing can be found here, (in the proper forum). :)

Agree with Mike Hammel - Krylon "Short Cuts" is the way to go for any type of foam. Short Cuts is acid/acetone free and won't eat foam even if over sprayed. Other off-the-shelf spray paints will ruin foam with even the slightest amount of overspray. I've watched others ruin their depron and EPP models with Krylon Fusion, which might spray on well initially, but you'll end up with "leather skin" after the paint has dried.

EPP is expanded polypropylene. Usually in the form of "beady" foam, but with little space in beween. Beads usually somewhat larger than EPS. Waxy to the touch. Near indestructible. Tough, at any rate. Sounds dull. Soft, but dents made with fingernail quickly recover almost 100%. Burns with a bright flame, dripping burning melted droplets (if not inhibited). Smells like paraffin when burned and extinguished.

EPS is expanded polystyrene. Comes as beady foam in various bead sizes and densities ("Styrofoam") and as extruded, homogenous foam (blue (roofmate) and pink foam). Depron is also EPS, AFAIK. Much less mechanically and chemically resistant than EPP. Gives high-pitched sound when falling on a hard surface. Dents made with fingernail don't recover completely. If acetone or lacquer thinner eat it, it's EPS. Burns with a dirty, sooty flame. Distinct, sharp smell of styrene when extinguished.

Fusion works best on EPP and Elapor, covers well and fills into crevasses and works well with painters tape for sharp lines. H20 paint sucks - it's blotchy, heavy, uneven spray coats with the same application method I use for Fusion and it peals off Elapor/EPO even after removing the die release chemical on the foam!

I also like the cheap spray paints (enamels) from Wal-Mart, IF you spray very lightly.
