Please recommend to me a durable
Gasser Heli.

I am considering the german Robbe Nova Cuatro or
the CenturyHeli Predator Gasser.

Which one is more durable?

I agree! I know nothing about the Robbe Nova Cuatro so I won't comment on
it. The Century Predator is a very good helicopter and there are lots of
them around, at least there seems to be in this area! I can't imagine you
not being happy with it.

On the other hand, Bergen helicopters have been around for a long time and
are very strong machines. They also fly as well as anything out there. If
you need help, there's a forum on the web site that Kevin quoted where you
can ask questions. Beyond that, just give em a call and they're great about
talking to you directly.

I've threatened to buy a gasser for a number of years now. Finances are the
main reason I haven't but when I do bite the bullet, it "will" be the Bergen
Intrepid gasser! (*)

Same here. One day there WILL be an Intrepid EB (Extended boom) in my
fleet... Who knows? Maybe an Intrepid Turbine? :)

Ditto. My only experience has been with Chris Bergen online and he's
been VERY patient with my questions and VERY forthcoming with his
answers.

Yup! I wasn't sure about the EB vs the standard version until I got to see
them side by side. About the only downside I see to the EB is that those
800mm main blades are significantly more expensive than the 710's the
standard bird uses but beyond that, I'd probably go the EB too. As for the
turbine, I've had the opportunity to fly a Bergen Turbine Observer on
numerous occasions now and it is too cool. It's worth it just for the sound
of the start up sequence and the reserve power is "very" impressive. I'd
love to wind up with a Intrepid Turbine at some point but to be honest, I
don't see that happening unless I win the lottery or something. $6,850 for
"just" the kit and engine (that's "before" you add the flight
electronics!!!) is just a little to rich for my blood! :-o

his father, Larry, before that. Both are very friendly, personable and a
pleasure to do business with.

Hi David,

I don't think anyone said the Bergen helicopter is "better" than the other
two. The OP was requesting info on the Century and the Robbe. Kevin simply
mentioned the Bergen machine as an alternative and I chimed in, agreeing
with him.

As I said in my first response, I don't have any personal experience with
the Robbe Gasser so I can't comment on it specifically. I used to fly
Schluter (now Robbe) helicopters exclusively so I have no doubt as to the
quality of the machine or it's flight characteristics. I have had the
opportunity to fly the Century Predator Gasser on several occasions and can
say that it's a fine flying machine. I've also got a lot of experience with
Bergen helicopters in general and they are also fine flying machines, well
built and very tough. About the only downside to the Bergen helicopter (at
least by today's standard) is that it's relatively old technology. By that
I mean, it still uses a mechanical control system. They never felt the need
to switch to an eCCPM control system. I think that's hurt them in the sport
modeling arena but beyond that, it does nothing to detract from the flight
qualities of the helicopter. Their control systems are push/pull redundant
throughout and very strong with no unwanted intermixing of cyclic and
collective. That's not something you can say about an eCCPM system unless
you're careful about the initial setups, servo centering, etc.

As for the companies themselves, this is the impression I've had of them
through the past few years.

Robbe/Schluter - when Miniature Aircraft (X-Cell) had the import rights to
Schluter helicopters in the 80's, parts and support were great. This was
pre- X-Cell days. When Robbe bought out Schluter, it was like everything
dried up. Parts were harder to come by and it was harder to find someone to
talk to. I can't say how they are these days. All I know is, I used to see
Robbe/Schluter all the time at fun-fly's and contests. These days, I rarely
see them at all.

Century - is a relatively big company and they sell a number of successful
model helicopters, not the least of which is the Predator Gasser. As with
most places, I've heard good and bad stories about them but I see their
products being flown at every fun-fly I go to and they're very good about
donating products for raffle and door prizes at these fun-fly's. I recently
attended a fun-fly in Sulphur, LA that raffled off a Predator Gasser that
was donated by Century. It's really good that they support the hobby that
way.

Bergen RC - is a relatively small company that was very active in the sport
side of things through the 1990's. They eventually moved more into the
video platform mode and most of their machines are designed around aerial
photography and/or heavy lifting using single and twin cylinder gasoline
engines as well as the Wren turbine for power. They also sell a couple of
sport models that use the Zenoah G26 engine and a version or their original
Intrepid that's geared for a 90 size glo engine. They had some financial
issues around the turn of the century but are well past that as far as I can
tell. A lot of their customers are government agencies and schools. Their
industrial twin has been used for the development of autonomous flight
systems although I'm not privy to the details of that. Still, it sounded
pretty cool at the time.

Yeah, but seeing those 800s swingin is pure magic... As for the
ticket price on the turbine.. It's only money!!

There are others, as you've noticed, but the Cuatro is the dogs bollocks
while the others are merely its pubic hair.

Durability isn't the best reason to buy a particular heli, is flying
qualities are what counts. A durable heli that flies like crap will NEED to
be durable to withstand the abuse it'll get, but a good flying heli will
fly.

If you'd flown one Steve, you wouldn't recommend the Bergen. The Cuatro
flies MUCH more smoothly and is an absolute piece of piss to control.

Probably because they've not flown a Cuatro (robbe). The Century is a cheap
alternative to the Bergen and the Robbe.

Well, as I said in another post on this subject, I used to fly
Robbe/Schluter and I can not and will not complain about their flight
characteristics. However, I do have significant experience with Bergen
helicopters and I don't have anything to complain about with them either.
The simple fact for me is, Robbe/Schluter isn't seen much in my part of the
world any more. I'm sure they're a lot more common on your side of the
pond.

Not when you consider that Robbe doesn't support their products worth a flip
over here. That "might" not be a totally fair statement to make but the
simple fact is, in the last half dozen fun-fly's I've been to, I saw "very"
few Robbe helicopters. The last couple of fun-fly's I've been to this year,
I didn't see "any" Robbe helicopters. There were lots of X-Cells, Raptors,
Hirobo's, Varios, Aligns', etc., but no Robbe's. They're just not around
any more and the last folks I talked to complained about parts availability
going down and pricing going up. Not a good sign.

I know they make a first class machine and it saddens me that we don't see
them like we used to over here. Oh well.....

As for the Bergen, I don't really see that many of them at fun-fly's around
here either but I deal with them in other venues and I like their products.
On an absolute basis, they "might" not be as good as the Cuatro but I'd be
willing to bet they're not a very far off second.
